Version name of Risk? Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Hi all,

A while back I played a version of the boardgame Risk with some folks, and it was not the standard version I played as a kid. Now, I would like to buy this version, but I don't recall the name.

There was a Moon area, and there were countries in the oceans as well. There were also Leaders and a bunch of risk-type cards that applied only if you had the corresponding Leader unit.

Anyone know what this version of Risk is called?

I've been thinking about buying that one for some time now. I think it's actually called Risk 2210. How is it? Since you want to buy it, can I assume it's a good game? I also just noticed two other versions: Risk Godstorm and Lord of the Rings Risk. Anyone played either of these? If so, how do they stack up?

2210 looks cool. You can play the standard game with it. I've seen the game but not played it.

I have LOTR Risk and have played it a few times. I like it a lot. Obviously the map is Middle Earth, which I like a lot. You can play with standard rules or additional rules, but I've only played it with standard rules. It does seem that they left some things out of the rules, but that can be easily fixed with house rules, using the standard game as a guide. I like to play two player games as the bad guys starting in the south. You can only have up to four players.

I just want more Risk games, like Mesoamerica and Dune. And I wouldn't mind having LotR Risk on the computer.

Thanks. I've had the original Risk for years, but I'm curious as to whether the extras in Risk 2210, such as devastation markers, leaders, moon and sea colonies, improve game play. I have Risk on computer, but I haven't played it in years.

I have Lord of the Rings Risk and I like it better than the Original. You have to pay attention to the sea lanes, their utility is a bit surprising the first time you play if you don't.

Yep. I had thought that it was an advantage to start with forces built up in the south, but I guess with the sea lanes it's not such an advantage.

Full PM-box? Change here!

having seen the thread in Apolyton/community, now I am here.

My brother got Risk 2210 as a christmas present a couple of years ago. would have been better when we were kids, we would have played it more. But as adults, it's hard to get together and get a long board game together. So I have only played this game once.

In fact, because I've only played it once (and even then- I took over for someone midway through the game), I have forgotten alot.

I would say it's better than risk simply because it has more options and I'd say it has more strategy because of it. Too much of classic risk relied on luck of the cards. And the one cool thing (if you don't like spending forever on a game) is the time limit. The one thing I do remember is some cool strategy the last turn of the game. People saved up some cards they never thought they'd use, but they came in handy.

I'm not sure it's better than the original. But maybe I say that because of nostalgia sake. But it's worth checking out imho.

Well, the real problem with Classic Risk board game is that Australlia had only one direction attacks could come from.

By comparsion (% of border territories)

Australia : 25%
North America : 33%
Asia : 42% *
South America: 50%
Africa : 50%
Europe : 56% !!!

* Asia border length can be graeatly reduced by:
1. Owning Ausralia
2. Defending Central Asia from the Ukraine in Europe.

That would combine to reduces the border percent to 18%

The only problem with defending in the Ukraine is that you are subject to attack from way to many places. I feel like Asia is nearly impossible to defend.

My father has a real ancient edition where the Ukraine territory is called "Sovjetunionen-Ukraina" (no, I'm not gonna translate that for you). I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a newer edition at a friend's in which it just said "Ukraina".

There's an online version out there somewhere that lets you play on random maps. Can't be arsed to find the link.

Grabbing Ukraine is a must if you want to hang on to Asia. Then again, nobody managed to do it in all the games I've played. Including me.

I'm more fond of the smaller continents, and try to to a slow steady rise to the top. Australie and S. American are 2 of my favs.

I like those two as well. I do try to innocently build an army in some out of the way Asian territory (Bringing it to fruition with a book). The small continents are simply feints until I can unlease my Asian hordes!

Australia is the best if you want to hoard an army, but everybody knows that so nobody gets it without a bloody fight.

Well, there's a reason that Asia is worth so many armies . . . It's just about impossible to defend. Agreed that Ukraine is a must to hold Asia. You've just got to limit the number of entry points that you have to defend. I don't think I've ever held Asia for more than one turn, with the exception of late in a game when the game's pretty much in the bag. (And I'm assuming that nobody here's really counting those, anyway. By the time your last opponent is limited to, say, South America, or, better yet, not holding any single continent, holding Asia just doesn't count as much of a challenge.)

The longer I have played the less I like the Austrailian position. Mainly for the reason that you outlined, but also because of its geographic position. You have to leave to many units holding to many countries before you get where you can do some damage. It is also nearly impossible to protect your Flank. I prefer trying to hold eithier Austrailia or SA with as small a force as is possible to ward off attack while trying to concentrate my armies in an out of the way province and then using that army to move forward with.

The advantage of holding SA is it's a springboard to grabbing NA. Which is probably the best continent to have, providing you also have Iceland, Venezuela, and Kamchatka

yeah that's why I prefer it over Australia. Going from Australia to Asia can be too tough.

And sometimes I'll go for Africa instead of N. America depending on my position after gaining S. America.

Suffering from ads?

I have seen a number of references to how difficult it is to hold Asia, but no one talking about holding Europe....is that because it is virtually impossible?

In my games, it seems that Asia is very seldom held because if someone does hold it for an entire turn and collects on it, they are usually the winner very soon after. Therefore, everyone with access (North America from Alaska, Africa from East Africa, Austrailia...if held by someone else, or from whoever holds Europre) will attack the person who holds Asia to make sure they don't hold it for long enough to collect.

I have seen Europe held even less then Asia however, as it is too central and gets attacked from all sides if it ever is held (even worse then trying to hold Asia IMO).

Like I said above, if someone holds Asia and succeeds the game is virtually over, but if someone tries to hold Europe the game is virtually over for them. I don't think I have ever seen someone win by holding Europe, and I know that I have never done it.

We play maybe a couple times a year, but with families and kids it becomes more difficult to set up games, it was easier to plan a "Risk night" when my group of friends was still in University. I do plan on playing over the holidays however, maybe I will return to this thread and let you know how it went .

p.s. Thanks to Dissident for referring to this thread in the Other Games Forum, I never would have seen it otherwise.

My favorite moment in Risk would have to be when I took out the top player totally just because of Risk cards and some luck. I started in Africa, then SA, then NA, into Asia, and then Australia, and I put my other forces in Europe taking Asia from the other side. There was only one other player at the time (beside the top player and I0), who was basically eliminated anyway.

Risk! is mostly a game of luck with a tiny bit of strategy. I am sure all of you have seen the "Rambo" scenario where a lone defender killed off many, many attackers.

We use to play using the variant of dealing out cards for initial territories. This is even more luck dependent but gives more variations than the standard method.

Anyway, I have seen people got dealt all of SA or Australia, but then everybody else ganged up on the poor sods.

We used the same card-dealing method. I actually prefer to set up the game this way. Sure, it's more luck-dependent, but makes for some great variety in the game.

I had forgotten there was any other method, we always play by dealing out the cards.

I have played a couple games with picking territories, but I don't like that method at all.

What is the majority of the players here method of choosing starting territories?
