That's what I'm finding out in my current game, actually up until now I haven't played Japan.

On top of the revolts I have inflation climbing (currently it is at 5.4% and I have automatic bank loans at 5.1%). My economy is almost in shambles. Japan is quite the challenge!

I've never played Japan myself, but a tip I've seen is to take out Korea and Manchuria ASAP, and China if you are skilled enough, since the massive revolts only happens in the Japanese home provinces.

I was thinking of an early rush on Korea but witheld hoping to build Japan's economy up peacefully. However given my current game situation I may have to start over and give your tip a try.

It is 1650 in my Sweden game. I have taken Norway, Gotland, Iceland, and Greenland from Denmark, and I have colonies and trading posts in Newfoundland and in a few of the small islands in the eastern Caribbean (for some reason, Spain had only gotten around to colonizing St. Thomas, thier loss, more $$$ from sugar for me; it looks like they were concentrating on Mexico and Cuba, they haven't even touched the Inca yet). I am currently concentrating on colonization, I won't be starting wars for a while because I have 20 BB points.

Oh, and this is turning out to be a very unusual game. Spain has conquered Portugal and SCOTLAND(!). Brandenburg has ceased to exist, Bremen is the dominant power in Northern Germany. The OE is expanding into Ukraine and Russia instead of the ME and North Africa. The only thing normal in Europe is England not being invaded, and Austria becoming the Great White Blob.

Spain seems to have a weak AI. It is more interested in attacking people in Europe then colonizing so it never achieves its historical empire.

Even when Spain decides to do expansion in america, the AI ineptitude becomes apparent.

Actually, Spain is one of my favourites since the game plays like a historical 'what if'. Brittany is another interesting game.

How ... odd??

In basically every game I've ever played Spain seems to have been the one constant. It always seems to end up all but annihilating the natives of South and Central America, colonising most of the Carribean and the South, and having a smattering of other territories from India through East-Asia.
I don't think I've ever seen them fail quite honestly ...

if you play on furious agressiveness, spain will act like oerdin said... otherwise, itīll build itīs colonial empire and - most likely - diploannex portugal before it starts colonizing east africa...

Yes, people often mistakenly assume that agressiveness is a second difficulty setting. It's not - it's an AI setting, and can often make the game easier because the AIs are always in wars. Try playing with a more timid agressiveness instead. Some people hold that the most difficult setting is coward/very hard, but I personally prefer to play with weakling agressiveness.

I always play furious back it's the only way to get the ai to actually do anything.

I'll try a very hard/normal game next.

On coward/very hard, you have to work for your conquests. The real strategy is maneuvering the AI into a war because waiting for a CB event gets very depressing.

One thing I often do (when I'm at the stage where I can survive without allies anyway) is stay out of alliances, or rather let your existing alliance gradually collapse.
Once divested of that burden you can wait until your 'intended victim' is at war with somebody (shouldn't really take too long) and you'll often be able to jump in and mug 'em without the CB hit by joining up.
Even if the alliance leader has a pretty negative reaction towards you you seem to have a good chance of getting in while they're at war.

In my mods, it's not quite the annexation fest it is in vanilla. You get timed cores, so you have to sit and wait for a bit. Gives you time to build up the country and work off some BB.

Sweden game update:

It is 1680, I have started a few colonies and trading posts in northern South America, including a colony with a gold mine. I also started a colony in the section of W. Africa with another gold mine. Basically I am concentrating on settling the richest areas (sugar, gold, tobacco). I am building up an invasion force to take the Aztecs (and thier gold ). The Austrian Great White Blob has expanded westward to the Crimea, pushing out the Turks. France went Protestant, and then reformed(!), and beat the sh*t out of Spain (taking the 3 Basque areas and most of Burgundy). England has colonies in the eastern US. VENICE started colonies in Lousiana and Africa!

Got spare money?

MEXICO IS MINE! ALL YOUR GOLD ARE BELONG TO US!

I am building up my present colonies. Russia has taken a chunk out of Austrian Ukraine, but Austria has conquered the Ottomans! France has taken the Low Countries from Spain. England is still concentrating on thier American colonies. Venice has become THE power in Italy. Austrial is slowly eating Germany, only Bremen, Stettin, and Cologne are still not conquered of vassalized by Austria. I have an Alliance with them, so I will probably end up in a war with Austria soon.

AUSTRIA RETREATS IN SHAME!

They had more manpower in Europe than I did, But by was able to use my great wealth to buy a few mercenaries and had a good bunch of alliances in Russia, Great Britain, and the surviving German states. Austria was allied with France and OE. France tried to invade by ship, but my navy, along with GB's, massacred their fleet. My army, along with Bremen and Cologne, repeled a seige on Cologne, and crushed the main Franco-Austrian force on the western front. In North America, I took France's colonies in Canada. Russia charged in from the east, taking Ukrane and parts of Poland from Austria and the Caucusus reagion from OE. I surged east, taking northern and western Poland from Austria. When Austria grovelled for mercy she lost almost half of fer empire to me and Russia. Sweden is now THE most powerful nation, with colonies in Africa, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Brazil, and Indonesia. It is 1800, and I'm #1.

Tired of ads?

I'm playing Aethiopia right now. My empire consists of most of Nubia (my previous ally crushed after it converted to Islam), entire Zanj, Zanzibar island, and almost all coastland of Africa from Bisharin to the coastland of Namibia plus two provinces in India. I'm allied with Indian mights - mostly because they tended to attack me when I was not allied with them. I'm not asking them for any help, I'm just keeping them away from thought of attacking me. It's moving slow. I only had a couple of wars in which I really participated.
