Don't take them on in direct combat until we can actually take out a sizable chunk of the combat ships.

I like the idea of taking the fight to our enemy, but we haven't even attacked the GS stack yet. At a certain point containment will fail; sooner rather than later if GS and GoW do the smart thing and press on despite GoW's losses - though who knows, GoW didn't do the smart thing with their initial landing. But, even if they don't break out of their boxes as fast as they now can, they will eventually, and we need to take out as many of them as possible before that.

4-5 tanks is a vital part of that. Let's not spend production on marines just yet. I realize this opportunity will likely vanish if we don't seize it ASAP, but I think we'll just have to take that loss.

I'm trying to keep up with everything, but RL is getting pretty busy. In any case, the plans look good.

Great attack on the GoW stack. Of course, we with there were more survivors, but all in all...not bad.

I agree with ignoring the GS marine stack, but taking out the transport.

I think we need to put the strike on the GoW airstrip on hold. We need all our production to defend our homeland.

In any case, good to see others closely involved to help Vondrack with the planing.

OK - look at the timestamp of the previous post. That was when I started playing this gigantic turn. And now look at the timestamp of this message. Just sent the save on.

Granted, I have had some phone calls and was answering some emails in the meantime, too, but I basically needed 5 hours to play this turn...

I am going to put the partial battle report for GS together, post it, do some work, and then comment on the rest of the turn.

Overall, things went rather fine. Especially bombing those GS MIs seemed quite successful to me. Chronicle entry fully updated.

Trip, grab your save from there, please, I was not sure about your email. And thanks again for fixing the save! As much as I hate this game (as in "hate/love relationship"), not being able to finish it I woud hate even more...

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

GS has no bombers - just 2 fighters. And quite likely, they will use them for air superiority (they know we've got 3 bombers close to their fleet). I do not think they have means to bring the population in Abilene down.

Suffering from ads?

OK, finally having few moments to comment on the rest of this turn. I did or had to do some minor changes, will list them below. Otherwise...

...the waters around Zargonia were clear, H.B.S. Artemis checked the whole perimeter and spotted nothing worth our attention (and defenses in Zargonia).

...the isolation of the GS SoD was done in a way allowing our pillaging horsemen (and explorers) to be used in an anti-explorer wall sealing the GS explorer in the triangle between Q.M., Abilene, and Ahhmyfoot. The only way through, actually, would be via SW of Q.M. - if GS took those workers of ours, they could then sneak their explorer through. However, he would only have 4 more moves left - and that would not be enough to reach anything valuable. And we'd capture him next turn.

...sinking the GS transport was easy - we even had a spare shot at the GS marine detachment. One 2/4 BB, one 1/4 BB, and one 1/4 DD now in Q.M., waiting for repairs in 1270AD. The remaining heavily damaged ships were moved to W of Abilene in a bit desperate attempt to prevent a seaborne assault at Q.M. (could still work, though).

...one major change against the posted plan was that I did not use our bombers against the GS carrier-led fleet. It was a risk (GS might have and probably had a fighter on air superiority there) with no possible gain, not even with favourable RNG. The problem is that a 2/4 DD won't defend a 4/4 transport, it will be the other way round (IOW: a bombing run would target a 4/4 transport, not a 2/4 DD). redstar surprised me stating this few weeks ago when we discussed our battleship assault, but it's really true, which I checked with a faked scenario. So, after both our DDs hit their targets (1hp off the carrier, 1 hp off the 3/4 DD), the 2/4 DDs got to the bottom of the virtual defender-ladder, below all those 4/4 transports. And there was no point bombing the transports... so I left the bombers for later, for the GS SoD.

...the other slight change against the posted plans was in how I distributed the blocking ships around Abilene - planning, I made a mistake, believing the new 4/4 DD would not be able to reach SW of Abilene, which was not the case. I swapped this 4/4 DD with a 4/4 transport for better balanced blocking stacks.

...we were quite successful bombing the GS SoD. Out of 12 shots (3 bombers and 8 artillery bombings), 11 hit their targets, 4 of them even for 2hp. Not bad at all - most of GS MIs are now at least a bit damaged.

...worker jobs completed just fine, we even had one spare worker which I moved to a pillaged grass W-NW of Forkmouth. We better fix as many pillaged tiles as fast as possible. Being able to produce replacement units fast is vital. I admit it did not occur to me to add this spare worker to Abilene. Fortunately all GS could theoretically use to reduce Abilene pop would be two fighters... I hope this oversight will stay unpunished...

...damaged tanks distributed roughly 1:2 between Jackson and Dye Fields.

...luxury slider fired up to 20%, which should hopefully keep us at the same WW level even if being hit by a huge number of attacks.

...production plans followed wherever possible. Unfortunately, our WW dropped a level and as a result, shield production in several cities dropped below the critical level. Plus, the pillaging around Q.M./Abilene made a dent in the production figures of these cities, too... I had to go for infantries in two or three cities, so we cannot expect more than 6 new tanks next turn.

...one rather funny moment at the end of the infantry deployment phase was when I, all of a sudden, started to miss about 15 infantry - eventually (after about five minutes of scratching my head and desperate right-clicking) found them in Jackson...

... the very last addition was moving U-S1 a tile closer to our coast. If GS chooses to not attack with their marines this turn, the worst thing they could do to us would be moving their fleet 5xN, joining it with the last remaining full-health naval forces currently westwards from where their detached marines landed (it's visible in the picture posted in the beginning of this thread). If they do it, we will have to hit them hard - that tile allows attacking Sandonorico, even if not to blitz through it...

I can tell you one thing, Lego. You're not going to like our battle report. Sorry

Anyone having an idea what DeepO might be referring to? Got me worried right after waking up (damn him!). I even opened some maps to check for possible oversights...

There's no freaking way they could break through our 4/x BBs guarding the entrance to Q.M. (only transports to attack with). They could break through the sea wall around Abilene, but even that wouldn't be enough to take Abilene, I believe (I'm having troubles believing 54 infantries could be defeated by ~60 tanks and ~45 marines). And there is no other target within their striking range.

So, what the hell is he talking about... does he only mean they are determined to attack Abilene? That would actually be fine, if you asked me...

Perhaps they tried to break through our sea wall around Abilene, succeeded, and are now planning to attack Abilene with all their tanks and marines? That could be it... just that even that many attackers would be unlikely to take the city. ~60 tanks should kill about 20 infantry defenders, leaving Abilene defended with 30 (damaged) infantries - I really doubt 47 marines would be able to take it then... I mean - a 4/4 marine has only 37.5% chances to kill a 2/4 infantry in Abilene...

Enough, we put together a great plan and a great defense. If they found a way to compromise it, which I doubt, then so be it.

In any case, I see no need to start beating yourself up when we don't even have the battle reports or the save.

Also, they might have just had an incredibly lucky attacking streak, and not actually taken a city. If they won twice as many attacks as they lost, I think we wouldn't like that... but like lmtoops said, don't beat yourself up over it!

A guess of what happened:

They succeeded to break through our sea wall around Abilene and thought that we were defending Abilene only against tanks. They didn't expect to not be able to take Abilene with combined marines + tank forces.

Hence the change in their tone, from initial excitement to the later somewhat pessimistic posts.

Could very well be the case... then it will be about losses.

Actually, breaking through the sea wall around Abilene was not all that difficult if they put up with throwing transports against warships. They had many empty transports around.

Now they may be left with an untaken city, battered troops, and few transports to carry reinforcements in...

That would be, IMHO, a good moment to talk to them.

Of course, we may be hanging on a thread, having last two 1/4 cavalries in Abilene... in which case, it would be pretty much over...

Dammit... I was not exaggerating saying that I prefer less excitement - I am not particularly enjoying my feelings ATM.

I am staring into the map and feel like an idiot. Can anyne tell me, how in the hell, can someone with troops positioned as GS ****ing destroy Legopolis?

Breaking with a handful of empty transports through three 4/x battleships?
Defeating 54 infantries with 60 tanks and 50 marines?

I am lost...

Hm, something has just crossed my mind... and if they did it that way, it was truly brilliant and we lost the war because of our own oversight. Having GoW send them Military Tradition & saltpeter last turn, they could finish few cavalries this turn (a single one would actually do), transport chain them to the newly found fort city, take Quanto - and be done with us.

Must have been it. A 3-mover transport-chained from Stormia. That's why that lonely transport was moved deeper into the ocean. Our city placement was what DeepO referred to when speaking about the lack of predictability.

OK, now we know. We forgot GS could have artillery in those still loaded transports. Unloaded them into the fort city, bombed our BBs down, finished them with transports, took Q.M. - game over.

Jesus, that hurts badly. All those hours and everything's gone because of a silly mistake (we had 3 more ships in Q.M. lined up for repairs - leaving them outside would probably do the trick).

Oh, well. This was definitely the last game of Civ3 I have ever played.

I, for one, am proud of what this team has accomplished, and I think you deserve a standing ovation, Vondrack.
