Two corrections to the replies:
1. You CAN get rid of a city by building a worker in original Civ3 if your city is size 1 and is not growing. You have to be at the "right" point in terms of food as one poster alluded to--hard to explain. If too much food, the city grows to 2 and instantaneously produces the worker, thereby remaining at size 1. If too little food, the city waits for the extra food to build the worker. I wish I could tell you exactly how the mechanics work, but basically all you have to do is this: Complete all the shields for the worker, starve the city, and wait a turn or two. The city WILL disband after asking for your confirmation.
2. In original Civ3 (not sure if you need the patch since I've always played with the current patch), you CAN abandon a city by simply right-clicking on it and selecting the appropriate option.

Good explanation. I'm pretty sure that just starving won't work, since the city itself will always produce (at least?) 2 food, regardless of the terrain. You also need to build a worker (or settler, which is trickier, but also works with a size 2 city with the right amount of food).

No, I am saying that you CAN destroy a size 1 city by starving it AND building a worker. I am saying that you cannot destroy a size 1 city by MERELY starving it (without also building a worker). I don't know about agricultural civs--that must be a C3C game concept. I am only familiar with the original Civ3.
