The quality is very bad and it would probably not look very good. If you have photoshop and the original:
You'd have to cut out everything leaving only the object (everything else is transparent - convert background layer to layer 0 first). Then you have to restore the shadow: Clone the object and drag it a bit to the lower right corner. Paint it gray (not paint over the transparent area) and apply some blurring filter. Put it behind the other.
Resize the image to fit as avatar and in "File>Save for web", choose gif and make sure transparent is ticked.

Almost... Make sure the transparent colour is the same as the background colour you are using your image on, otherwise the effect can be quite nasty...

Or just say "**** you IE" and use PNG's with alpha channels. If people are too lazy/stupid to use a decent browser it's their problem...

Although I don't know if you can use PNG's on Apolyton.

Umm I think Photoshop (7) makes transparent automatically when you have an object on transparent background or no background (and have the object just floating in it's layer surrounded by transparent areas, damn what's the english word for this)

transparency test

see, all I did was convert background layer to layer 0, cut out all the white (using the magic wand). Then parts of the image have no color and photoshop interprets these as transparent if you choose transparent when saving it as gif in the save for web dialog

If that's true in PS7, then I didn't know that Too bad I almost only use Fireworks nowadays for graphics

That's not going to work on Poly though because of alternating background colours.

No it does not
or else why would the face still be filled with white?

You should have enlarged the tolerance of the magic wand a bit or widen the selection by 1-2 pixels to cut out the soft parts.

Here is my avatar with black background.

Here is how I did it:
1. Load avatar with white background
2. Magic wand select all background areas (tolerance ~20)
3. Widen selection by 1 pixel
4. Delete everything in selection
5. Hand optimize some parts that look two much edge-like, with the stamp tool
6. Magic wand select all now transparent areas again
7. Widen selection by 2 pixels
8. Apply Gaußschian smoothening (0.6 radius)
9. Make a new layer, paint it black and put it below the current one
10. Save
