The most poignant part of the movie was the guy standing at the machine gun and crying as he killed these very honourable samurai.

ACK!

They would make a better point if they flanked the fixed position and over run it. The guy would probably cry even more if he was the only survivor among the minced- meat gun crew. It would REALLY prove the Samurai way.

I hate Hollywood movie makers who didn't even go though boot camp. There are just too many idiotic military moves depicted as heroic.

No, I did not. Please explain to me: What was the honour of losing a battle you could easily have won, by attacking from a 90 degrees different angle?

I thought you'd mention that. They are both similar: they are not intended to be "realistic" but instead "poetic". They are both there to make a point: both are in the movie for a specific reason. Last Samurai is completely about the honor of the warrior, and the most honorable thing to do is fight until you are dead. In Platoon, the point of that scene was death of innocense, ie Dafoe's character was the "good" one, and his death was modeled as a sacrafice, but it took dozens of men to bring him down.

I, for one, love poetry in my movies.

The point was, the Samurai knew that they couldn't win the war. Even if they had won that battle, they would have lost the war.

The whole point of them fighting was to get the Emperor to do what he finally did and grow some balls.

Japanese culture is different, obviously....

That does not explain why they used such clever tactics in the infantry battle the same day. If the point was to die, why not die instantly, just running bravely against a wall of rifles?

Put an end to popups!

I watched Hero on Wednesday. Half way through I thought that the movie had utterly no point other to be a vehicle for a seemingly unending stream of gratuitous martial arts battles. The conclusion however tied it all together. This is probably the first Quentin Tarrantino flick that I can say that I truly admired.

I also watched The Incredibles this week. Hey, what can I say, I've got kids.

Tired of ads?

I also love Rambo 3, where a Russian GENERAL (!!!) in a helicopter attacks Rambo, who's riding a tank, from the FRONT OF THE TANK INSTEAD OF FLANKING IT. And Rambo just raises the tank gun and shoots the helicopter out of the sky.

It reminds me of something

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory with Steven Segal. It was on Channel 10.

I viewed two bad pictures in the cinema lately.

The Forgotten , which seems like a nice psychological thriller but ends up a silly
spoiler(highlight to read):
alien movie
.

And I watched "Japanese story" with a lady friend. Literally. At the beginning it was us both and another couple, but they left mid-film saying something like "there's no hope for this".

It was an amusing bad film.

yep. It really has some unrealistic action scenes.

The funniest is when he sends an 18 wheeler with a full load of flammable liquids onto 9 wheels and dodges a rocket fired from a shoulder fired launcher.

Actually, I give Bond movies a "get-out-of-prison- free- ticket for being unrealistic. They are supposed to be exaggerated. Other movies, some of which I mentioned, are unrealistic where you expect them not to be.
