Civilization & Empire - Strategy Game of the Year 2005? Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I mentioned this in the Civ4 forum but thought I'd drop it in here too. Looks awesome and might tide peolpe over until Civ arrives in 2010 These guys at Slitherine seem to be doing a few things right - www.slitherine.co.uk

Slitherine are pleased to announce Legion II, its new 4X strategy game (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit & eXterminate). Initial design work on Legion II began early in 2004 and the game is slated for a late 2005 release. Legion II is set in the ancient Mediterranean world and players can choose to take control of any of the major civilizations at the time including the Romans, Carthaginians, Gauls and many more. Players can choose to challenge scenarios with established civilizations, or build their civilization up from nothing on a clean, randomly generated map.

Found new cities & improve existing ones with a choice of hundreds of different buildings.

Explore the vast campaign map, discover continents, meet new tribes and locate rare resources.

Use the random map generator for endless replay value.

Research new technologies, build new structures and recruit new troops.

Send diplomats to negotiate, spy, broker peace deals & provoke wars.

Trade 9 different essential resources.

Allocate workers & keep them happy to prevent riots and revolts.

Withstand droughts, floods and religious unrest along with a wide range of external influences.

Win by total domination or by completing missions.

Play as any side in any scenario.

Recruit great leaders to command your troops.

Build fortresses and besiege enemy strongholds.

Undertake epic construction projects to impress your people and other civilizations, which bestow great benefits.

Historically accurate units, uniforms, cities, nations & leaders.

Auto resolve battles or take control of your men directly (uses the Legion Arena battle engine).

Other games by these guys also look good. Not tried Arena yet, but Gates of Troy and Spartan are great games.

Legion Arena - coming in Jan 2005 I think

Gates of Troy - selling direct from their site (I always like to buy direct to give the developers that exra bit

Spartan

Thought I'd do my bit to spread the word for the upcoming developers

I was going to make a snyde remark about it looking like Rome: Total War. It looks interesting, however, so instead I'll make one about it being in the wrong forum. Should be in Other Games, where we could be getting +1s!

pah! Once you've gone Paradox, you don't go back. Looks about as deep as Command & Conquor to me now, but then so did Rome: Total War (although that's an excellent game).

I cant stand Paradox games, but I know they are popular with the hardcore

Just because the game looks easy to use doesn't means its simple to play. Some people confuse bad UI design with deep game play! You'll probably find more stats in the games above than in EU, but they are presented in a graphical way which makes them easy to digest. Same goes for Civ.

Most important - I want a game & not a stats heavy historical simulation! Anyway - each to their own.

EUII, Vicky and HoI are not history recreators, that's the fun of em, seeing Europe turned into a German hegemony by 1890 for instance, or playing as the UK and giving South Africa to a satalitted Zulu state, or seeing if you can lead Mexico to displace the USA from North American power! (tough one that).

There are lot's of stats in Vicky because it's an incredibly deep Grand-Economy game, with loverly juicy conflicting-forces all over the place, and patterns within patterns and... I stop now, this not advert.

Vicky does have the odd UI nitpick but... well. Besides, I once heard it said "We like someone for their strenghs, but we love them for their weaknesses".

So there, I'm off to marry Vicky and there's nothing you can do to stop me!

It does look like an improvement over Legion I. The orginal was neat to play, but overall it was to restrictive in what you could do. Thsi new game seems to me to be a big stepup.

It depends what you mean. Arena is looking like an RTS, but the others are definitely not. Play the demo of Spartan and see - you dont have to fight battles and if you do you can't control the squads, just set all their orders in advance and then sit back and pray

This is the problem though - most people are dismissing it without even taking a proper look! I can promise its well worth your time!

Demo is here - http://www.slitherine.co.uk/spartan/downloads.htm

Why are people saying that it looks "interesting"? It's just a rip-off of total war, only poorly done and minus the cool combat. It's even the same time period and everything. Lame.

It's NOTHING like RTW, if you played Spartan (Slitherines last game) you'd know that. Except for the combat screen, the others look exactly the same as Spartan, which was a good but not great game IMO.

Spartan was basically Rome: Total War (although made before it) only poorly done and minus the cool combat, too.
