Welp? Has anyone played COLONIZATION, a lost game that was the only strat game produced by Microprose that was superior to the Civ series?
I mean, everyone remembers Dr. No, but no one remembers From Russia with Love, which is superior to Dr. No. So I am not surprised people don't remember Colonization.
For those of you that do not know what it is, it was a game in which you played on of the four major European powers, and you settled the New World. There you'd encounter the three other colonies, which you could make war with if you pleased. There were Indian tribes, some of which were worthless and some of which, if you destroyed their village, you got a nice, tidy sum of gold. And there was the tireless micromanagement, for you'd mine furs or tobacco, then you could sell it as a raw product, or you could improve into something like coats or cigars. Muskets were the hardest, cause you have to upgrade them from tools, which came from ore. Once you had enough Founding Fathers [read: techs], and the populace supported you enough [to do this, you had STATESMEN which worked out of city hall producing LIBERTY BELLS, which counted toward your independance.] you could succeed and become your own country. But beware, for some cities may stay with the king, and soon after you'd have to withstand the European armies attacking you cities. If you produced enough more liberty bells, you could get assistance from a foreign power. When you had destroyed all the King's forces, you had won. After that when you played you were referred to as some nation, and once a nation was created, they treated colonies like dirt. [The USA was the worst, at least in the game.]

I was playing Colonisation at 4 am this morning. Sid's 3rd best game, behind Civ II and Civ.
It's a reat game, but it can become a little dull mid game, but does provide very good micro/macro management (with out traderoutes, it would ba a nightmare)
All in all it has aged very well, and as I'm still playing it now, 6 years after it's launch, it must have something....

Hey War, if the copy you got was free (I'd assume so), would it be too much to ask for you to email me it?
See, when I first bought it, the game didn't work, so I took it back and got my $50 back. But once I had my money, the program worked. I have, since, deleted in and need a copy.
If you can, thanks. If you can't, that's fine.

Colonization was the Bomb! (translation: it was really really good).
My 3 favorite parts were:
1. Getting a "specialist" citizen back in Europe and bringing him to help build the New World.
2. Pirating the ocean and stealing some of my opponent's hard earned goods!
3. Setting up a mission at the native village and getting a convert.

Scouse Gits, I tried to email you threw a good service, but that failed so I replied to the message [using the second address] you sent me. Tell me if you got it. I've had problems emailing anything with a .uk on it. Perhaps the email designer was French...

I think we need a game about the spread of religion threw peace and war. I think that would be interesting.
The versions would be:
Christian
Muslim
Jewish [although no one would buy it once they read the history of Jewish militantism to spread judiasm]
Okay, mean joke, but serious the Jews never made war to spread their religion like the Christians and Muslims did.

I have played Colonization, and I found it fun for the first game.
After that, it is somewhat repetitive and
not very interesting. I would say that it does not excel in replayability. It did have some cool stuff, like the trading which accurately represents more or less a trading economy of those eras.

What is needed is the trade and specialization features of Colonization with the progressive elements of Civ. Scrap the founding fathers idea [this is Col's version of techs, and the Founding fathers include the likes of Chris Columbus and Cortez, so FF is a vague term at best], and make a Civ game with Col micromanagement and city specialization. This'd make enormously long games, but ones very involving, so involving one could tolerate playing against the computer.

Colonization is a great game until the war of independence starts, then the combat system becomes tedious. But I still play it. The early game, when I'm developing, is the best part.
Putting the best features of Civ II with Colonization's best features is a good idea.
