Let us now praise famous men ...... Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

We've had lots of threads about games. And a few about game companies. This thread is to name the INDIVIDUAL person involved in gaming who has done the most to merit praise, fame, etc. While Im thinking primarily of game designers, lets not forget coders, artists, etc, or for that matter visionary individuals at publishing houses, hard ware makers, retailers, etc. Even members of the fan community, such as prominent modders, etc (er, lets NOT discuss proprietors of famous Civ websites, please).

Who deserves fame, and why?

Will Wright - for appealing to the widest audience (think Sims)
Peter Molyneux - for his crazy ideas that nobody likes of late, but hey, at least he's innovative

John Carmack and John Romero - for being the craziest coders like ever

See this link. Short answer if you don't want to follow the link: maybe Metroid Prime.

Which reminds me that Alan Emrich and Tom Hughes deserve mention for publishing several strategy guides that were actually worthy of the name.

Will Wright is interesting, for Simcity as much as for the Sims. Simcity had a big impact on spreading PC gaming outside the "hardcore" much earlier (it was my first PC game) and was a principle inspiration for Civ, according to Sid.

Its sad that he'll be mostly remembered for the annoying trash that is the sims and its infinite sequels and expansions now. I hope EA burns down, without insurance.

Yuji Naka (programmer) and Naoto Oshima (artist) for creating Sonic the Hedgehog, I probably wouldve said the worst idea for a game character since Jack the Ripper on Spectrum at the time, but it worked.

Also Paul and Oliver Collyer for inventing a little game called Championship Manager.

Is it a general rule that coders of FPS are crazier than coders of TBS games?

Well I guess i didnt say ELECTRONIC, now did I? So since we're opening it up, let me add Jim Dunnigan, who started the modern war game craze at Avalon Hill, and went on to lead SPI through its glory years. Not just PC wargames, but Civ and the whole TBS genre owe alot to him.

a couple, not many. Oddly (or maybe not) some involved with shooters and that sort - the above named crazy coders of FPS's are both associated with a woman designer, I think.

There was an article on this recently. I cant recall where.

That's how it goes. Wright will be remembered for Sims, Molyneux will be remembered for Black and White. As time goes on, the classics that gave them fame originally are forgotten.

Uhh, yeah? Would a normal person code a game where you kill everything that moves, and try to make it as gory and realistic as possible?

Chris Taylor for Total Annihilation...

Jane Jensen for the Gabriel Knight series...

Chris Sawyer for the lovely Transport Tycoon and the first Rollercoaster Tycoon...

Bruce Shelley, he helped Sid to create Civilization and then created the new standard for RTSs with Age of Empires...

Steve Russell for creating Spacewar, the first interactive computer game ever, back in 1961.

Nolan Bushnell for two things: Atari and Pong

And, of course, Christopher Hartpence (AKA Velocyrix) for his giant contribution to this community...

(I could extend this to all the Civ and CTP modders who worked hard to create better game experiences, but I'll leave this to others... )
