Since the Spartan navy presumably (again I STILL am not up to speed) is facing only few hostile ships, many Spartan warships have been seeing little battle. In between combat exercises and drills, I would expect that some crew would throw nets overboard to catch some fish (or the Chironian equivalent) for the crewmen to eat or take home as souvenirs or traded with other seamen...

I should point out that Great Britain during the age of discovery had a large amounts of ships that served multiple purposes (albeit with some specialization) in war, shipping and fishing. (However, commerce is unaffected by a merchant marine :P )
