T148 - 330ad Got spare money?

This time Monkey abandoned Capuchin, their far-western city, leaving just Gorilla and Macaque. PC has dropped 1 in pop - another poprushed unit, and the Monkey Navy has destroyed HMS Dumpy. Also, some time back they destroyed HMS Jumpy too, leaving just the reg Frumpy (1/3) heading to port and Queen Vic watching the Latin Straits.

So, Monkey have at least one, possibly two galleys in the west, and we have none atm. Could they be planning a raid? It would cost 84g to rush a galley in Bodmin Moor (south of Frisco/Blencathra) and 60g to rush a galley in Cow River. Another possibility would be to divert some reinforcements to the west.

Crap. We need more galleys. I'd strongly consider rushing one or two of them, yeah.

Check the Tabemono contact thread, btw, I just got a PM with a complicated tech trade proposal. I haven't really read it yet (like I said, it's rather complex and it's friday afternoon for me, and I'm just about to leave and go drink some beer)

No time to fully document this turn, but I rushed the 2 Galleys in the west, and set Coventry to a Galley in the east. Also, I dunno about a Courthouse in New Haven when it's right next to the eventual PJ site. We lose 4 shields switching to a Galley, but we need a navy. Switched.

Stack moves south to Pri-Cent89. 1 Musket and 2 LB on their way down from Seige Perilous.

Home Guard units hold in Cow River region (well, 1 cat so far, but more on their way).

Well done.

This is gonna suck, btw. Monkey is going to drag this out and avoid combat until they have the maximum # of troops they can muster, and then force us into nasty siege warfare... after which they will STILL not be dead.

We may have to get into a discussion of what happens once they are exiled to Monkey island. We cannot land with their sea wall up, and unless we come to some understanding with them re: faux war, they can just sit there and never make peace with us.

I doubt they'll do that. I expect Beta and H_E would see it as a bit cheesy. RP considered it against the foes during/after the Bobian war but that was when personal animosities were on the boil. It's not like that here.

After seeing poor Vondrack devastated in the other game, I've come to the conclusion that winning DGs should be very very low on life's priorities. I'm more interested in playing for fun, and not getting too stressed out about success and failure. I certainly don't want to spend very long on MM and planning, and I don't mind losing because of that.

Even if Monkey go barbarian, holing up while we blow all our shields on units - it's a victory of sorts for us, and I don't mind slipping back to 5th while the happy builders on the other continent surge ahead. If us and Python are miles behind by the time we de-monkey the continent, it takes us off the threat board for the others - who must fight each other one day.

Agreed.

A long time ago, I remember making a post in the GS forum basically saying that we would inevitably have to sacrifice some efficiency in order to retain our sanity (IIRC, this was around the time Nathan burned out).

I realize now that it's more than just that. It's not just the time/effort you put in, but the emotional attachment that gets created.

In short, let's not love our empire too much, because there are pretty good odds that it will eventually get torn to shreds.

-Arrian

p.s. We started this game with the deliberate aim of having a more fun, lighthearted PTWDG. CoD, from the moment we selected England as our civ, chose not to optimize everything for victory. This continued with our city-spacing. It doesn't mean we go out of our way to play sloppily, but I'm done with planning our worker actions and city builds 20 turns in advance and MMing down to the last shield.
