Yup-- and even if someone can beat me they are far from the best. The best I ever played was buster. He dominated in a veterans challenge game I opposed him in. It was a 4 player with no AI and he just rolled over one of the other players. I capitulated when he controlled a good two-thirds of the map and with dominant population and Projects.

Well-- one player made the unusual choice of the cult and it seemed like he made the mistake of attacking buster early. The result was buster picked up some bases and then I think got some resources not to kill this cult player, including a pact. I pacted with the other player and even gave him a crapload of tech-- I probably gave 3 tech for every one I got back. . .. I built up a good armed force but buster declined battle with me and just invaded and then chopped and dropped my pactmate.
We were probably at around tech parity but with the addition of my pactmates bases, busters tech rate quickly ballooned to around twice mine. With PBs on the horizon, my key bases were in range of some of his secure bases while I had no hope of hitting his interior
In retrospect though I made a crucial early error. The map is the veterans map over at CGN. It has 4 identical continents, 1 for each player in each corner (no wrap-around) and a sprawling center continent. Every landmass was 8+ tiles from its nearest neighbor. My mistake was not grabbing an early foothold in the centre continent. It cost me as a strong set of outposts could have gven me some defensive depth. . . when I played the same map in veterans6 game I went to the centre early and was ahead when mongoose disappeared. I had eliminated one player entirely and controlled 2 continents and all the centre. Paul and mongoose had teamed up but I occupied about a third of Paul's continent and had just taken out a dozen of Mongooses satellites before nuking him with a reactor 4 PB. (taking out about 4 Projects and about 80 population).. We were only about a dozen techs from transcending so a very fun game . .. I thought I should win since I had a 2 tech lead and control of the satellites with something like 10 ODPs and some of each otehr kind wheras all my opponents satellites were dust - - - - -- err sorry to babble so much-- probably the most fun game I played
Back to Buster . . .. I see my error now but still doubt it would make a difference. The parts of his game I saw was just methodical and efficient. His tactics were flawless-- he had an advantage and exploited it without any undue risk to himself. Also I was far from his only victim-- take a look at the game records-- he won a lot--- Now no one is unbeatable but buster has the credentials to say he is one of the best.
