"But I do not agree with Mythic for reasons I have already (tyranically) enumerated."

Oh, and I don't mean to be throwing stones from glass houses, but if this is the shot I think it is, then it clearly illustrates that you missed the point of Nathan's 'tyranny' argument, IMO.

I voted, No

Although initially I was in favour of the idea, Dominae fully convinced me (tyranically ) that I was wrong. Besides, addition or insertion of a level is beyound of being conservative mod.

PS There is nothing more tyranical than a well stated position

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

The reason I didn't combine 1 and 2 was that it would make for too long an answer. Both are answers indicating that Mythic Hero has value.

3 and 4 need to be separate because players who are not ready to move up yet might find Mythic Hero useful in the future, and therefore cannot be discounted as people for whom the level is inherently useless.

I think some people are missing the point of why conservatism is important. Normally, whenever a mod deviates from stock rules in a way that people dislike, it gives them a reason not to use the mod. Put enough such issues together and even if each change individually attracts the support of a majority, we could still end up with a situation where the overall package is so different from stock that it turns a lot of people off. By adopting a conservative philosophy, we reduce the risk of causing people to decide against using the Mod because it contains changes that they dislike.

But I see no significant danger in that regard with the Mythic Hero concept. It is something entirely optional, so people who don't like it can simply choose not to use it. Further, because the difficulty level is a matter of game setup rather than of options within the game, players don't even have to impose special restrictions on how they play above and beyond the AU Mod rules in order to avoid using the change. (In contrast, even though I opposed turning the Modern Paratrooper into a Special Forces unit with amphibious assault capability, I don't impose a "house rule" on myself that prohibits me from using that capability.)

So it's hard for me to see how conservatism ought to get in the way of the Mythic Hero concept. I can see how a blind, unthinking conservatism could reject the change merely because it is change. But I don't see how the reasons why conservatism is normally important provide a compelling argument against Mythic Hero.

Nathan
