	wow I did it!! Suffering from ads?

The JavaScript edit function: Check it out!

You can directly edit your postings by just double clicking them. After you have finished editing the post, you'll be asked if you want to save it (which then should send a request to the server - not implemented in this example).

Here is a technology preview (download the file).

In this preview you can edit postings of all (2) users, which is not what we would want for the real version, but easy to control. It's cool because it's in place editing! Check it out!

It's not compatible with bbcode yet.

to answer your questions beforehand:

Yes, but that is intended. Otherwise you cannot really copy something in from other posts.
The cancel option is when you say cancel and then reload the thread or close it or whatever.
But, you are right I'll think about more sophisticated things, maybe put everything in a form with buttons "Save" and "Revert" below and not use the onBlur Method.

Yes I think that should be possible, I try to make it as simple as possible so that the changes will be kept to a minimum.
The bigger problem is that you edit HTML directly and I'd need to convert it to BBCode first. This could get a bit ugly, but probably only requires a single function.

In Firefox yes, in IE I believe too. Haven't checked Opera.

Here is a slightly updated version. With Save and Revert buttons.

Should work fine in Firefox 1.0, IE6 and Opera 7.5

You need to enable ActiveScripting in IE (JavaScript in Firefox) or in Opera (whatever it is called there).

If you open the file with IE, it will disable Active scripting by default and tell you about that in a lightly colored bar at the top. You need to click it and tell to enable it.
Or use Firefox and enable JS under tools>options>Web features

The advantages of doing this client side are:
1. Less requests to the server
2. WYSIWYG, which should reduce multiple edits
