They are a little limited in terms of battle orders. We could try something new and divide the army size section up, maybe into three or four catagories (Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and .... I can't find a good term for ranged units like archers, but you know what I mean). Give each of those a size, and then we can get some kind of differences between nations armies besides just size and overall training level.

My guess is that Micha will be into joining, he joined the NNES when it was running.

I ran into this:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showt...95&page=1&pp=20

over at civfanatics. It's an NES centered around tribes of garden gnomes trying to take over a yard. It's structured enough to be fun and fair, and it's silly enough in nature that Bipolarbear's sarcasm wouldn't interfere with the mood. It's closed over there, and I wondered if it might be fun to ressurrect over here. With a few changes, anyway. Is anyone else interested?

This one just seems fun. Kudos to Xen over at Civfanatics for the concept, but there are some things about that NES that I wanted to adjust.

For one, the gnome NES over there lost interest due to gnome colonies being too far apart to make contact within a couple turns, so there was no diplomacy. Either make gnomes expand faster, allow longer distance raiding to force contact, or make everyone start closer together. One thing I really like about this NES is that it'd be easy to expand the map; just move into the neighbor's yards.

Anyone else interested? I'd be happy to mod this one, I'd like to take a shot at that.

Gnomes would be difficult for me to play, I just don't have a lot of insight into gnomish culture I would play if the rules were greatly simplified.

I think the best way to fix it is to make the radius of the settlements much bigger or make a new, smaller map. Also, the settlements have a max pop/soldiers that can live in them, but how many gnomes are actually there aren't listed on the map, or anywhere else. The GM should put important information like that on the map.

Not knowing gnome culture? They are living garden gnomes that are 11mm tall, they have no culture, you make their culture.

Put an end to popups!

Make up the culture, that way we'd get distinctly different cultures for each tribe.

I agree, bigger settlements, or at least areas of influence around settlements, is the way to go. There's a good chance I'll lift the map from the one over there, it's a good one for the purpose.

My time is limited during the week, but I'll start working on it. How do you link to a map, rather than posting it?

Increase Your PM Length

I'm working on getting the map up, for the moment go to the link Gamecube64 posted a few posts back.

Please request where you'd like your Gnomish nation to begin, your nation's name, and anything else you'd like to throw in. For example, a short description of your nation, including any special cultural traits you want your nation to have.

Light green grass is short, trimmed, and maintained lawn. This is a risky place for gnomes, since it's exposed, but it enjoys the most human traffic, so there's an excellent chance of finding dropped goodies here. This part of the lawn gets mowed regularly.

The regular green is the grass that isn't cut as often. These areas get less human traffic and are therefore safer than the light green.

Dark green means a tree. Although these are technically garden gnomes, arboreal cities are allowed, but they will almost never get the advantages of human contact, and have limited growth potential. By the same token, these trees are very safe from human interference.

The brown box in the upper right corner is the compost heap. Lots of insects here, many of which will prey on gnomes, but also may be captivated and put to work.

The blue stuff is water; the rectangular one is the pool, the other two are ponds. Water provides some unique opportunities, like fishing for tadpoles and the like, with larger fish and frogs that might eat your gnomes.

The things that look like bushes are bushes. Bushes provide good cover for gnomish cities, but beware the housewife, who will prune them from time to time.

The things that look like flowers are flowers. More human traffic than usual here, which is, as always, both a blessing and a curse.

Brown dots are anthills. Yellow squares are beehives. Both species can be captivated to use as beasts of burden or cavalry. Grey circles are lawn ornaments; your gnomes regard these as gods. Gaining control of these will boost their morale, while losing them will hurt confidence in you as commander.

I think the barbecue is self-explanatory. If you can find a use for ashes or soot, feel free to go here for your carbon needs.

Gnomes, at the beginning, are limited to simple spears made of twigs with stone points. More advanced weaponry will be available, just specify that you're researching it. Gnomes can make fire, but should be careful not to use it en masse, or the humans might just wonder why the fireflies are marching across the lawn.

Gnomish cities can be founded inside the house, but the death rate is very high here, so almost no growth will occur. However, all the coolest stuff is in here, so there is a purpose. Your initial starting city may not be inside the house.

Cities may be on the ground, underground, arboreal, under the patio, under the driveway, carved inside a tree (although it will kill the tree if overdone), anything you can think of.

I have a slightly unorthodox idea for an economy here, so bear with me on this:

Gnomes have perfected what humans haven't; the ability to work together for a common goal with no regard for their own life. Since they're so small and weak (and tasty to nearly all animals), and breed like rabbits, any gnomish undertaking will be met with the death of some gnomes. Your population will be a stat. To begin a project, simply describe the project, and say how many gnomes you are assigning to this project. Depending on how many gnomes were assigned, how well you described the project, and how dangerous the project is, a percentage of the gnomes assigned will be killed in the process. That doesn't mean that by doing anything, you'll lose population; your population will grow by 10% (or some number, it will be a constant)every turn. If you are a good commander, the bigger your colonies grow, the faster they'll grow, through the magic of geometric progression.

One problem with this NES over on Civfanatics was the lack of contact between gnomish nations. To adress this problem, I'm allowing relatively fast movement of gnomish war parties. They can perform a raid in a single turn, and carry off food, weapons, and anything else the victims own, which will allow their own colony to grow faster for a turn. Assigning gnomes to be soldiers will take them out of the ranks of productive gnomes, which will slow your growth.

I'm still not having much luck with posting the map, can anyone give me more explicit instructions? I'm not as computer-literate as I could be.

Do you know to save pictures as JPEGs, JPGs, or PNGs?

First go to the link I post and right click on the picture when it shows up. Click on save picture as and put it where you want it. Open it with your picture editing software and do what you need to do then go to Photobucket or Apolyton Upload. On photobucket to upload a new picture log in to your account. You should see "add a new picture" at the top. Click browse and find your picture, you might have to change the file type it is looking for to all picture files. On Apolyton it is the same. When you upload a picture you can then copy and paste its link.

Photobucket came up with an error every time I tried to upload it, as did Apolyton. It's saved as a .bmp, which is a supported format for both services, but I do not know how to save it as something else. I will poke around and see if I can figure it out.

Hah! I win! Much thanks to Gamecube64 for the help.

Map: http://apolyton.net/upload/view.php...entasof3-16.PNG

Please begin requesting start locations. In the interest of keeping inter-colony contact at a reasonable level, please begin your colonies in the backyard; that is, the right-hand half of the map. I aim to have this started by the weekend, and I may even have some free time this week to do that in.

Hmmm... your map is almost 7 times bigger than the guy from CFC. Could you try again in PNG format? I don't know the compression differences between picture types, but PNG must be alot more efficient than JPG.

His is about 200KB
Yours is about 1.4MB
In bmp it is a whopping 8.01MB!!!!!

I can look, but I don't have much in the way of graphic editing programs. I know I had only three or four options, and JPEG and bmp were two of them.

Only 8 megs? When I had that in .bmp, it was something like 11.

While the format may change, the layout of the map won't, at least not 'til the game starts. Choose your starting places!
