The only differences between levels in a Human-Only game are:

1. How many happy people you start with
2. How much corruption you see ("Optimal City Number", or OCN, is lower as the levels increase - the number of cities you can build before starting to get a lot of corruption)
3. Barbarian bonus - Regent you get a 200% combat bonus vs. barbs, Monarch 100%, Emperor 50% (ie in emperor a 2 archer vs a 1 barbarian is really a 3 vs a 1 ... in monarch a 4, in regent a 6).

That's basically all. A few other minor details like length of anarchy, but you don't notice them much. Higher level makes luxuries worth more, basically, and makes barbarians mean more - but then again you can just increase or decrease the barbarian level to counteract that.

I was thinking this over- doesn't it make sense to play at the level of the least experienced player? That way all the settings are at the levels they are used to and those who normally play at a higher level must make the adjustment, slightly leveling the field. Going the other way is likely to cause an even wider rift between skill levels...

although, i do have less experience in PBEM than anything else actual diplomacy works with people. i think the highest i've yet ventured in single player is regent.

I've always argued on this level But i'm not picky. And if there's no AI then who cares?

it seems there is a problem. rommel 2d can't play monday nights anymore, but it is still the only reliable night i have to play. do we just want to launch as a PBEM and see what happens?
