Empire Earth 2- The True Hybrid Of Civ+rts? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

I am a big fan of civilization and love to LAN alot. most of my friends would rather play a RTS (Real time strategy) rather than a healthy game of civ2 or 3. Aparently the perfect cross is being made called Empire Earth 2. This combines the empire building ect. of the civ series with detailed RTS style battles. What is best however is the amount of multiplayer abilities they have added which made the civ games great. Has anyone else heard of Empire Earth 2, or could giv me there opinion on it?

If you like Civ and they RTS, try a Paradox game with them.

When i played empire earth 1 played it like an rts game not like a civ game. Empire earth may have more ages then games like age of empires but it is still a rts game.

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Empire Earth was alright. Rise of Nations was great, my preferred RTS game so far. Still, despite the many Civ-like concepts in RoN, it remains a RTS game not very much like Civ. If you like RTS, then you possibly like something separate from Civ. In a Civ game, how fast you react never matters. In a RTS game, it always matters. No matter how you combine the gameplay elements, it will always be separate.

Worse, it's a bad RTS game.

I'm not against RTS games, actually I like some of them. But please keep Civ turned based.

Rome: Total War is the best "Empire building" game out there.... far superior to any TBS or RTS... period.

I agree, but RTS can never be superior to TBS, except in the tactical sense, IMO. RTS is about reflexes and is best suited to tactical battles, while TBS is about grand strategy and suits that purpose well, at least that is the track record thus far. Again, nothing but one man's opinion.
With that said, RTS games of late have been taking a step in the right direction... with pause functions, and various 'speed' settings, more grand strategy can be deployed and emphasized, though it's still a long way off from competing with TBS.

I haven't played the game yet, so I can't really comment on that. If I remember to, I'll come back to this once I've actually tried the game.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

As to the original poster's comments, considering that Empire Earth 2 isn't out yet, if you want a civ-like game in RTS format, try Rise of Nations. It sounds like exactly what you want. I own it, and it's ok, but it's a RTS, so I can only play it once or twice a year... which indicates my distaste for the genre overall.

I thought that too before playing Hearts of Iron. Another Paradox game, Victoria, is one of the best civ-type games I've ever played. Might be worth checking out.
