Unfortunately, it still fails the upgradeability requirement, which the Mini/Micro-ATX boards meet (Nano-ITX doesn't really, as of yet...).

But there is a big damn problem here (pardon my harshness). Is the Mini Mac useful for the budget user? No it is not. Next case.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Of course you ask a blanket and misleading question that is somewhat to the side of what we have been arguing about.

That doesn't change anything. We are talking about it as a music player. Of course Thurrott is going to say that since his big beef is that it doesn't support third party services.

As he writes:

quote:
I do believe that Microsoft tried to make WMP 10 as simple as iTunes, though it hasn't quite met that goal. On the other hand, WMP 10's primary advantage over iTunes--and it's a big one--is that it's extensible by third party services, and can host those services.

Ergo, insofar as it's a music player it tried to copy itunes and failed. Whatever you think of the other options that is a fact, and that is what is at issue here.

As he says in the original review:

quote:
Today, Apple's iTunes is the simplest, most elegant media player available for any platform, and the release of WMP 10 doesn't change that.

Seems like he thinks itunes is a better media player there. Are you telling me he is contradicting himself now?

Perhaps he's changed his mind since the review. Doesn't change the fact that this is what he said.

No it is not. It can't be. Why? It isn't useful. Again Apple forgets what the word "useful" means.

Do yourself a favor and divorce PPC from Apple in your mind. Please. Because PPC can be useful, and indeed, two of the next three consoles will be using the PPC platform, as well as several servers (including many that IBM makes). Furthermore, Genesi's Pegasos platform is also PPC-based, and has a lot of potential utility--most importantly, that of being a PPC workstation alternative to Apple. PPC is neither a bad nor a useless chip architecture.

quote:

I never said it was useful for the budget user. I also never said it was something I'd buy, and I also never said I liked it on an individual basis. Hell, since you obviously don't remember, I've consistently been the one railing against non-expandable/upgradable computing machines, with a particular antipathy towards all-in-one boxes. If you read my comments again, you'll see that I mention only one situation in which the Mac Mini might be useful, and I myself state that I'm unconvinced at hits utility because of its price/performance ratio.

Dude, you're arguing against me, when, quite frankly, we're pretty much on the same side... Oi, Fez, you're almost as bad as Mr Nice Guy. At least you don't rant non-sensically about God, and I thank Him that you aren't a Mac fanboi, too.

He doesn't even suggest that WMP tried to copy iTunes... merely that they sought to make WMP as easy and simple to use as iTunes.

You're arguing, however, that making things "easier to use" is copying Apple... which is a bizarre claim to make.

Read the rest of the original articles. Several itunes features now appear in WMP. He even says that one's first look will make you think that itunes had been melded with WMP 9. That would be a bizarre thing to say if you weren't stating that WMP had been made "itunes-like".

Frankly, I don't see the resemblance...
Maybe it's the small fact that WMP has that very useful Stop button and iTunes doesn't, or the fact that iTunes has a very visible Burn button whereas WMP does't... not to mention the color scheme, button/feature placement differences...

It's somewhat derogatory to be called a Fanboi in the first place. Adding the i at the end makes it even worse... 'cause being a fanboi's as stupid as that Anvil song, Sk8r Boi or whatever it's called.

Still, in the face of the author himself clarifying his position, you still try to say he meant something else.

I'm surprised no one mentioned that AMD's losing money again.

As I've said to Fez and other AMD-zealots many, many times -- AMD makes the occasional excellent chip, but their business and management side is a complete farce. The company is never going to be anything but a niche player. That niche changes depending how good its product is -- right now it's an enthusiast chip, in the past they were value chips.

Either way, they're not in the same league, business-wise, as Intel.

WMP features have made it into iTunes as well, though.

One of my original complaints with the original iTunes was that it didn't have a "mini-mode" player ala WMP and Winamp. Sure enough, it did in a future version.

Did it ever occur to you that the "melding" comment cuts both ways? He didn't focus on what iTunes got from WMP because it was a WMP review, not an iTunes review.

The point -- as I've said a thousand times now, and as Paul has said clearly himself -- is that both products are becoming easier to use and simpler for the average end user. This does not mean MS is "copying" Apple or anything of the sort, like you want to infer.

It's a misleading question because it doesn't address what we were talking about. He doesn't want to say it is inferior straight out because he wants to give MS kudos for multiple music stores - his favourite beef with itunes.

But look at the original article. He notes how WMP is adding itunes features and how it has become more itunes like as a media player, and then he says it isn't as good. Plain as day.

In some respects it's apples and oranges, because itunes doesn't play video or do the other stuff, but it is pretty clear from the original article that he thinks it is better at what it does, and WMP tried to do the same but fell short.

If he wants to back out of it now, that's not my problem. But that's what he said in his original reviews - and I suspect he was just being diplomatic in his email.

quote:
The point -- as I've said a thousand times now, and as Paul has said clearly himself -- is that both products are becoming easier to use and simpler for the average end user.

Sorry, not what the original article says. As he points out it looks like a cross between itunes and WMP 9. There would be no point to such a comment if MS wasn't trying to copy itunes simplicity. And any doofus who looks can see that they were.

quote:

As has been said before, I don't see why anybody would use itunes or WMP just to listen to music when there's winamp or foobar out there.

If I want to play music I pick the application that easily lets me play music.

And yet, UR, Intel is almost always in the black, whereas AMD is often in the red.

Yes, Intel has made some stumbles recently, but... odds are, they'll be a healthy company for a good long while. Ie, if they were a person, unlike AMD, Intel isn't living from paycheck to paycheck.
