I am writing my final university paper, and I need your help. Please fill in this questionnaire: it will take 5 minutes of your time, and it will help me very much If you have any questions, please ask per PM. I'm a regular on 'Poly, and I check them every day.

The following questions will be useful to my studies in political sciences, as they will help me understand the political personality of the members of the Civ-community. Since some questions are quite personal, I will strongly care for your anonymity: your names or screen names will not figure in any way on the result table. You may reply to these questions directly in this thread, or you may reply per PM if you wish. Thank you for your cooperation

It's my final paper in order to obtain my diploma. I don't know how it's called in English, but I'd suppose that would be the "dissertation". It's supposed to be 80 page long, and your help, along with all other respondents' is very appreciated

I hope your questions are clear enough to elicit the information you really want. #5E, for example, seems to me a classically problematic survey question. "A country’s general welfare should always override special interests of groups and organizations." I agreed with this statement because I think that the public interest should GENERALLY supercede the individual's interest, but I would have to disagree strongly that it should ALWAYS supercede it, and in fact my own conception of the public interest includes a belief that some special protection of individuals' interests against the majority is an inherent part of the public interest. Kinda hard to answer clearly.

The really hard one, for me, was 5B, "The general welfare and interests of my country are seriously endangered by the continual clash of and demands posed by interest groups." I think that powerful, wealthy conservatives have almost managed to define "interest groups" as "those who disagree with us." But in reality, everyone who's not a complete loner is part of many interest groups, and their interplay constitutes nearly all of politics. I strongly support the participation of interest groups such as unions, environmentalists, consumer protection activists, educators, feminists, civil rights groups, and Internet forum geeks, while opposing the much more powerful interest groups such as media corporations, pharmaceutical corporations, oil corporations, racists, the very rich, etc. Wholly opposed though I am to religion, I fervently support the right of religious interest groups to pursue their values, even though those values so often oppose my own. So what does my "1" on this question mean? Good luck, Spiffor!!

Thanks for the comment, Debeest

I am quite confident in the questions, even in 5B (your comments correspond well to a response of 1). 5E contributes to giving the general idea that is conveyed by question 5.

These questions have been used fairly often in political research. They may not be perfect, but they're sure to be better than anything I would come up with

Isn't Apolyton a great source of inspiration? My Master's thesis subject is directly inspired by it (though it's the forum itself, not Civ).
