Hi
I'm a newby here.
I just bought a new sealed copy of Planetary Pack.
My PC is Althon 2500+ xp pro.
ati-radeon 64 ddr
512 ddr
80 G
And nothing truly special.
I would like to know if I'm going to have problem with it hehe...
And why is the firaxis website not offering more support for alpha centauri ? No download work on the site and there is no way to know if that game can be adapted to windows XP.
Is alien crossfire working too ?
I cant wait to have them and try it. But while I'm waiting maybe someone can help me to resolve eventual problem, so when I got It, I can spend all my time to play.
Thanks.

But you dont have windows XP
this is what may cause problem
I Cant wait to play this game.
I know this game since he exist but never played it. I finnally decided myself when I was buying Civilization 3 complete on Ebay, to get the conquer expansion and replace my play the world beta, I saw a mention : try other title : Alpha Centauri, then I click and start looking that game on firaxis web site.
Sad to see that they no more upgrade or do anything with that, even web site support.
But the pictures and the things I've read in this forum convinced me lot.
Now I can wait to play that.
As an oldshool civilization and colonization fan, as the other following titles, I think I will really enjoy this missing one in my collection.
I'm gonna spend lot of hour on SMACX alternate with the civilization 3 complete I'm waiting too.
Hehehe

There is I think you can still find it on the firaxis site, if not I'm sure some ac sites will still carry it.
Welcome to the AC fold! Most of us find this game better than Civ 3 when you feel ready join a few online games they are much much more fun!

You can still download that original 100 turn demo version at many sites (incl. 'Poly) and mess around just to get a flavor of the game
And while you're waiting for the game to arrive, here's the SMAC manual
and here's the SMAX manual to read

I think Blake missed the(very old point) a little. This game runs fine on the FAT system OSes, but the XP, etc systems need a patch.
----------
This game may be 6 years old, but it does not mean Civ 3 offers the same depth or fun. It actually should, but it doesn't.

I have SMAC/X Planetary pack on both XP Home desktop (3.2Ghz) and XP Pro notebook (1.0 Ghz), both work fine. Use "Complete Install" so no CD is needed to play, then apply Smac 4 patch, then SMAX patch, then WinXP patch and all is well.
Welcome to Chiron!

smacfan, I have been trying to get my copy of the planetary pack to run for well over a year now, and I just did everything you said - I still get the terranx.icd error.

and I just figured it out!! OVER A YEAR OF PATCHING, SCREAMING, AND TEARING MY HAIR OUT LITERALLY I FINALLY DID IT!!!!! I CAN ONCE AGAIN PLAY ALPHA CENTAURI!! WOOHOOO!!!!
I just applied all the patches IN THE EXACT ORDER smacfan gave, AND THEN I did this:
terran.exe I set to run in Windows 98/ME emulation mode, in 256 colours, no visual themes, and no advanced text services.
terranx.exe I set to run in Windows 2000 emulation mode in 256 colours, no visual themes, and no advanced text services.
I also added the old 'forceoldvoxelalgorithm=1' option to my AlphaCentauri.ini file and now I AM PLAYING SMACCPP AGAIN AFTER OVER A YEAR OF NOT BEING ABLE TO!! W00T!!

I should have also mentioned the 'forceoldvoxelalgorithim=1' option foir the INI file, which I did have to use on my P4 3.2Ghz desktop but is not needed on my P3 1Ghz notebook.
I did not need to set compatibility mode on either of my systems to get SMACPP to work, but I run in 1024x768 32-bit color on both systems (old eyes need larger text and icons). I don't use either visual themes or advanced text services, other than whatever WinXP defaults may be.
I guess I should also note that I usually apply all WinXP "critical patches" fairly soon after they are released. I have SP2 on both systems. Also I have DirectX 9.0c on both systems.
If it matters, I always use the "axstart.exe" method to start my games, this is the icon labeled "Run Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack" when you have finished installing.
Congratulations on being "back in the saddle again"!
