It's hard to say whether cheating is bad in this case. One can always make the argument that he'd make the same choices as before with a new character, up to the point where he was defeated previously.

There's no point keep repeating the same thing, no?

Put an end to popups!

Yeah, but there's cheating by using the octopus method, and then there's cheating by just claiming to have won all the fights and passed all the tests.

I'd like to think that there was at least one adventure in which the wrong choice led to an unwinnable fight, and the next page after the end of this fight exposed you as a cheat.

Suffering from ads?

The octopus method was MUCH worse than skipping the fights. I made my choices and lived or died by them.

I've played around with some form of ADnD since the early 80's and, while there may be better systems/settings around nowadays I can see why it's still popular.
I often used to integrate a few Gamma World crossover's - nothing like seeing a players face when they've just run into something nasty that they can't quite figure out and you just 'accidentally' let a part of the front cover of the GW rulebook slide out from the safe confines of your's DM's guide.

Other favourites: The aforementioned Rifts - pretty lousy system but one of the best settings I've ever seen. Particularly with Phase World thrown in.

WtA/VtM (White Wolf) - Again excellent settings but I never really got into the system. It always felt 'clunky' somehow.

Paranoia (WEG) - Anybody else remember this? Again a crappy system but utterly hilarious with the right group of players. I can just see Skanky and Spike playing this one.

Torg (WEG) - My all-time favourite. Brilliant game system and setting(s). Fantasy-pulp-Sci-Fi and horror all 'invading' different parts of the earth.

has anyone ever seen this movie? It's called mazes and monsters. It's supposed to address concerns of D&d on children. Looks hilarious in it's cheesiness.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Yep, I saw it. It's based on a true story, too. The moral of the movie? Don't play DnD, it'll mess you up.

yeah but the true story was made up by detectives and/or the parents. It was shown that he had other problems in his life completely unrelated to DnD.

I know, I was joking. They did that movie in the middle of the 80's D&D witch hunt. And Tom Hanks is in the movie, too!

Without looking, It's got Tom Hanks going to the Two Towers, also known as the WTC.

I have to agree that this is a really good setting with a really bad system. I'm just not sure how to fix it. They've got so many variables and factors in the system that conversion just doesn't seem practical. Something's bound to get lost in translation.

I have to disagree. Having spent quite a bit of time in 1st AD&D and Shadowrun, the systems on these never felt 'clunky' to me. You want clunky? See the aforementioned Rifts and 3rd edition Shadowrun.

I think I had a character made up for this one once, but never got around to playing.

I had my eye on this one for several years, but I was on a Shadowrun kick at the time, so I never got around to actually buying it. May have to go back and give it another look.

Interesting - I cheated when I was young, but then played properly when I got older . I don't think I ever actually finished a game I was playing properly, though...
