Hrothmund the Scribe Tired of ads?

Based on the Fall of Rome Conquest. I am playing as the Anglo-Saxons.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

My name is Hrothmund and I am the chronicler of my tribe’s deeds.
After centuries of swallowing other nations, Rome in the 42nd year of my king Hengest’s reign is like a fat pig ready for the slaughter and village feast. All ‘barbarian’ nations want a piece of the sow that is Rome and are sharpening their knives. The Anglo-Saxon people are no different and we yearn to drive the Romans out of the lands that are rightfully ours. I keep a record of the events that occur that people will forever remember us, no matter our fate.

March, Hengest 42.

Feeling that the Roman threat is weakening, large numbers of my people are leaving the safety of the capital and building towns. Bordeshelm, Bremen, Chippenham, and Repton were founded this month. Some towns started temples to Wotan; others were more practical and started training spearmen. Some braver souls boarded ships and headed for the island of Britain. Hengest the ring giver sent an emissary to the king of the Franks with gifts of gold. The French king received our diplomat in his great hall and spoke many words of friendship. It is good to have allies when you have an enemy like Rome.

May, Hengest 42

Messengers have come this month saying that the settlers to Britain have sighted Roman galleys patrolling the coast. I thought the Romans feared the sea but it seems these rumours are not true. Hengest calls the settlers fools for going to Britain with so few warriors but I think his anger is mostly concern. If the settlers should succeed in establishing towns in Britain, it will help him enormously should he decide to attack the Romans there. Wotan protect them.
Of more immediate concern are Frankish settlers wandering through the land looking for a place to build towns. They are not welcome to the east. Spies are keeping an eye on their activities.
More messengers arrived saying that there are now two more Anglo-saxon towns; Hohwacht to the south and Lindsey to the southwest. Lindsey is not far from the Frankish border and they are training axemen in case the Franks should see them as an easy target. But I should not suspect the Franks. They have done nothing to harm us.

June, Hengest 42

I do not know how or why, but a messenger from Byzantine arrived in the capital city this morning. With all the arrogance of a Roman he demanded that he be served refreshments that are impossible to find in our villages. We gave him dark beer and laughed at his grimaces behind his back. When the messenger was ‘refreshed’ he came to the business at hand. From a large trunk carried in by his servants he produced a map of the Eastern Roman Empire. Though I hate to admit it, it was truly a great thing. Not only the map itself, which was written in several colours inks and framed with purple needle work, but the size and grandeur of their lands and cities. I am sure all of our people could fit into one neighbourhood of Byzantine. The messenger said that he would trade this map for a map of our lands. I was rapidly dispatched by the king to fetch a parchment and draw a map of our recent settlements. Then the king told me to draw a few pictures or something in the corners to make it look more presentable. Arthur, one of our generals, added a little colour by accidentally spilling beer on one of the edges. The messenger from Byzantine was not impressed by my efforts but he accepted the map. He then asked to be shown to his chambers. Chambers!! We curtained off a corner of the Great Hall for him to use.
The very next day as we were sitting around admiring the Byzantine map, a messenger from Constantine arrived asking to trade maps of our territories. We told him to bugger off.
The Byzantine ambassador left after a week of being our guest. I think he actually came to like our dark and beer and Arthur. Several days later we heard from our expedition to Britain. Warriors had landed and were looking for a good place to build a fort. The settlers were still at sea waiting for a signal from the advance scouts.

The rest of the year was good for us. Our towns were growing and we were training axemen and spearmen to defend our lands and our homes. And to destroy the Romans when the time is right. With that in mind, I took the time one day to examine the royal treasury. Finding the vaults were full with gold I suggested to Hengest that we spend more money on training men in the arts of marauding. Our present axemen are brave and good, I told him, but we need stronger troops with better equipment to have any hope of fighting the Romans. Hengest, in all his wisdom, agreed with my idea and we set some of our bravest captains and blacksmiths to making a better trained soldier.
Messengers returned from Britain with the news that our people have founded a settlement on the coast called Cirencester. This settlement has not provoked any reaction from the nearby Roman town and I take this as a sign that the gods are with us.
The ship that brought the settlers continued up the coast where we made contact with the Celts. They are not at war with the Romans and stay behind a massive fortification called Hadrian’s Wall. The Celts tell us that they sometimes send scouting parties past the wall to spy on the Romans. They are bitter about the land the Romans have stolen from them and I think they will make good allies. Hengest ordered a gift of gold to be given to these hardy people. I am sure the gift wil be repaid tenfold in help they may give us when we start our conquest of the British Island.
In our own lands, our workers are busy building roads even through the cold winter months. They are good people and a testament to the hardiness of the Anglo-Saxon race. When even common labourers are this strong, how can the Romans hope to seize our lands?
