Im sure you are right. Adhd is overly diagnosed especially in young boys. The first dr told me that my son has no fine motor skills. Im not sure I have meet a bot or man that does. The meds worry me because they do take a toll on the liver, and hes still young.

IMO, I like to think that kids are pain when they have nothing they like to direct their attention to.

However, I know ppl who are ADHD meds as adults for the first time and praise the miracle of medicine.

Still, what if Einstein was put on rit?

Could the med have made him smarter? You know Speaking of that being smart tuberski has a higher I.Q then i do but Claims im smarter cause i have street smarts. I dunno. I want the best for my kids and if this med helps him what choice do I have. Me on the other hand speak of my fear of ADs, yet should probably go to the doctor and start them, since there are more days that id rather not get out of bed the to get out of bed. However I drink beer alot and those meds would interfere with that too.

Tired of ads?

How do you know if your medication is taking a toll on your liver? I'm currently using Oxascand, Efexor and Risperdal.

If you're really worried, just ask the doctor to do a liver profile - a really simple blood test that should tell you if you're dying or not.

Like Verres said, but as far as I know Risperdal isn't going to hurt your liver too badly, nor will Effexor if it's a low dose and you haven't been taking it for ages. If you've been taking Effexor at 225mg + per day for a year or more... or you've had a history of liver problems then get a test, otherwise I wouldn't worry too much.

Yeh I'm sure lots are being misprescribed. Here you can get powerful meds from GP's who barely know anything about it. Some doctors are just "coughs and colds" people. A lot of meds can encourage suicide... remember they're essentially ****ing with the chemicals in your brain... so if you don't have the condition that they're designed for, then you're playing Russian Roulette with an elephant gun.

This is the main reason I dont take them. The first psychologist i took my son to had him so drugged it wasnt funny. I changed docs and he adjusted the meds and seems to be ok. I on the other hand just dont have the patience to go from up to down trying to get the meds adjusted.

Indeed. The trouble with mental illnesses is you can't take a blood test and get it confirmed on paper with 100% accuracy that so and so and such and such illness. The result is that diagnoses and doses become educated guesswork that improve with time as the consultant can hone himself more accurately. Meantime you're a guinea pig.

When I was in nursing school doing my psyc. rotation, I spent time at the state hospital. Most of my subjects were in because they were un fit to stand trial or the likes of that and all of them were so drugged up that they just stared out into space. I dont think most were aware of who they were anymore.

I agree with Whaleboy, yet I have additional concerns surrounding the question:

Did these psychological conditions (including ADHD) always exist or did something change (or is changing) that is causing more of these cases to arise?

I will be willing to assume that these conditions didn't always exist, and that we are changing something. Maybe it is in what we eat; preservatives, prepared foods, etc... Or what we do. I don't know, but addressing the problem, such as these treatments, is only the start. We need to begin addressing the solution, and how can we?

Got spare money?

I want to believe these situations have always existed. When I look back on my child hood my brother was very hyper but was looked on like he was just being a bad kid. My mother suffered from depression however considering she had 4 kids and a loser of a huband and worked her a** off to support the family I cant imgaine why she wasnt depressed. Im not sure there is a solution to mental illness. The mind is a very strong thing. Its like if you look in the mirror you may be very thin but if your mind believes your fat you will see fat.
