Predicting Particles...

An important ingredient in the theory Veltman and I developed is an as-yet-undemonstrated particle called the Higgs boson. In the same way as other particles have been predicted by theoretical arguments and later demonstrated experimentally, we are now awaiting direct observation of the Higgs particle.

Using calculations similar to those of the mass of the top quark, there is a chance that one of the existing accelerators can be persuaded to produce some Higgs particles.

But the only accelerator powerful enough for more detailed study of the new particle is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, which is under construction and may not come online until 2007.

But Wait...!

A scientist says one of the most sought after particles in physics - the Higgs boson - may have been found, but the evidence is still relatively weak. Peter Renton, of the University of Oxford, says the particle may have been detected by researchers at an atom-smashing facility in Switzerland.

The Higgs boson explains why all other particles have mass and is fundamental to a complete understanding of matter.

"There's certainly evidence for something, whether it's the Higgs boson is questionable," Dr Renton, a particle physicist at Oxford, told BBC News Online. "It's compatible with the Higgs boson certainly, but only a direct observation would show that."

If correct, Dr Renton's assessment would place the elusive particle's mass at about 115 gigaelectronvolts.

This comes from a signal obtained at the large electron positron collider (LEP) in Geneva, Switzerland, which has now been dismantled to make way for its replacement - the large hadron collider (LHC).

However, there is a 9% probability that the signal could be background "noise".

Matter's fundamental particles are six leptons and six quarks.

In the standard model of particle physics the forces between them are described by quantum field theories. The electro-weak force (whose mathematical description got me the Nobel) is mediated by four exchange particles. These are the mass-less photon (gamma) and the three field particles W(+), W(-) and Z(0). The strong force is conveyed by eight mass-less gluons (g).

Apart from these twelve exchange particles, the theory predicts a very heavy particle, the Higgs particle H(0). The field of the Higgs particle generates all particle masses.

What's this? A physics joke? No!...

One day an atom walks into a bar and says to the bartender, "I don't suppose you've seen an electron here? I lost it last time I was around."

The bartender replies, "Are you sure you lost it here?"

"I'm positive!"

"No, No, I didn't do it," Exclaimed Hulse . "The evidence all seems to point to you," said Bednorz. So decided the physicists pushed Hulse out the window. The police, after questioning the physicists marked it down as an accident.

Satisfied as to their safety the physicists went to bed.

The next morning found......

If we don't find it in the next collider, it will mean a shaking of particle physics to the ground

the discussions I have seen make me think that it is heavier than 115 GeV

While I (t' Hooft) am still unclear on the mechanics of how the Higgs particle "generates and imparts" mass to the other, nominally massless particles (i.e., photon, gluons), I guess that's more the concern of my fellow physicists.

I just did the math that confirms the likely existence (however brief) of the Higgs particle. It's up to others to do the actual observing of it...

If only the US had gone through with their plan for a superconducting supercollider... (sigh)

(kill came in yesterday, I have had a hard time thinking of good clues for this mafia)

The next morning found Kenneth Wilson . Apparently he had decided to go walking down at the train tracks (he had had a call shortly before he left the hotel, hotel staff informed the police), and his shoes had gotten stuck in really powerful glue. When the train came, in the dark, he hadn't been able to get away and had been killed.

The police ruled it in accident.

So one death was really slippery and another was really sticky. Very reminiscent of the important and under-appreciated field of Physical Resistance.

As everyone knows, these qualities represent the extreme opposite ends of the spectrum on the Snottyness Scale.

Hmmm, maybe I should write the laws of relativity within the Mafia field for my next Nobel Prize:

Jonny's First Law of Mafian Relativity:
For every vote condemning a suspect to death, there will be at least 5 more identical and equal votes (though originating from different sources) in the same votesequence.
