Yes, Mao did theorise that. Though my understanding is the peasantry would be needed to form the backbone of revolution, to be led by the proletariat. In fact, IIRC, he maintained 3rd world countries such as China could not a communist country overnight, and the revolution should be a socialist one instead of a communist one.
