I'm fortunate in the fact that I've got a good relationship with the doctors who oversee my health from my family practioner to my dentist to my opthmalogist to my ear, nose, throat specialist.
I've been told that the best patients are those who are proactive in their care, hence I make sure my list of medications is always along when I go in for a visit, and I ask questions and run information by the docs that I've picked up from various sources (usually news articles, since that's my line of work) to make sure what I've read is accurate, and that there's no counter-indications for the stuff I'm taking (i.e. making sure a certain supplement won't cancel out the effect of, say, a blood pressure drug and vice-versa).
It's paid off so far. And that goes for the doctors' support staff as well nurses, receptionists and whatnot. I've got decent relations with all of them ... I can only wish more people could say the same ... seems to be quite a few patients who aren't happy with their medical personnel and vice-versa. Such a situation benefits no one, IMO.
In closing, I've only had one trip in recent years to the emergency room, and that was for stitches to close up a rather nasty leg wound. I got in around 9:30 p.m. at night and didn't get out until 12:30 a.m., but I didn't have anything else to do.
