I am suggesting we use a format that has worked well on other teams I am on - and which Vox has used from day one.

One turn thread for posting general discussion about turn moves, and for reporting on the turn played.

One thread for FF (foreign affairs) for each civ we meet.

Separate threads as needed for in-depth discussions on things like overall general strategy, city sites, science paths, etc.

Other thoughts?

The other discussion we need to have is how we organize ourselves. I am not a fan of assigned specific roles, or ministers and the like. We are only 6 on the team. 7 if Nimitz joins. He pm'd me that he wanted in.

I do think we need folks assigned to fe ambassadors with civs when we meet them. That maintains a consistent approach, and ensures that we don't send out mixed messages - unless we intend to.

As to leadership - I see it more as a matter of who is playing the turns. And that person or persons should be taking direction from the discussion in the thread.

I will start as player simply to get the game going - but we should discuss who does it - and whether we do it for set periods - whatever. I am easy on this.

I think everyone should get the save. OPD is asking me about gmail (Google e-mail) and I have to be honest, I'm not sure what the great benefit is. One thing you have to know about me - I know enough about technology and computers and the internet to allow me to play civ3. And that's about it. Someone wanted me to zip a game save for them - and although I have winzip, I have only ever used it to open thangs. Anyone give tutorials???

So again - any and all ideas on team organization are welcome. But I promoting the idea of a loose and democratic collective.

That sounds good. Having the equivilant of a Senate Floor will get too confusing. Seperate polls or threads for each issue is going to help organise things.

re: winzip
You should be able to right click on the .sav and then there will be a WinZip menu item. Or if WinZip wasn't installed with that option.

Open Winzip
Drag the .sav file into the WinZip window.

That's it.

Now you can help me. Why is it that on some threads I can see Avatars? Other threads I see Icons? Others both?

If you have winzip installed (it comes with WindowsXP), just right-click the save file and chose "add to archive". The following window is self-explanatory. Chose whether you want to create a zip or rar file and name it. Voilá, you got a zipped save!

As for the organization:
I like your proposed approach very much.
In the ACDG we have set positions, but the only persons constantly working for the game are the turnplayer (who happens to be the same for 60 turns now despite stating otherwise in our constitution ) and the diplomate.
All others are just adding their input where needed, without focussing on their official duties.

So I am much for a system with set diplomats to ensure consistency and a certain way to determine turnplayers, while all other affairs should be handled in a joint effort by all players

Nope - once we meet the other team - we can communicqate via e-mail or pm. Unless there is a rule I do not know about???? The in-game restriction usually only applies to pbem's that are designated as 'silent' pbems. See Gunboat for an example.

Also - thanks to both of you for th winzip tips. Will try that tomorrow.

Now, before I crash for the night, I'll see if there are others to authorize. Then again - it is Saturday night.

yup.

Each private forum has someone assigned to authorize folks for entry. I did it for the big isdg game. And each of the team leads is doing it for their respective teams here.

As for reporting the turns:
There should be a clear distinction between 'regular business' (moving workers, settlers, etc.) and 'out-of-the-ordinary business' (meeting other civs, exploring, building the FP, etc.). This will trigger discussion when it is needed.

The person who plays the save game should allow, after receiving the save, a short period to have people voice their opinions. He should not wait for a full democratic process to kick in.

It would be best if we can connect via IM (instant messaging - Yahoo, AOL, MSN, ICQ and the like), so we can decide upon urgent matters quickly.

Oh, and Gmail is just another web based email service. The thing is, it is better because a) it isn't Microsoft and b) you get a =big= mailbox.

Agreed. We are going to have to see how this works out. We have decided on a 12 hour goal to play the saves for the first part of the game.

skro - this is usually a case of how Poly is doing. I think sometimes when traffic gets heavy, they drop some of the window dressing to speed things up. I don't think it has anything to do with specific threads or forums. It is more just a matter of timing.

At least that's what I think it is. Someone in the main forum may know for sure.

Important: Please Read

Greetings all. To a number of the players from other games, this will be obvious and old news. To newer players, it may be intuitively obvious. But I will go ahead and state it anyway:

No team member, other than the designated turn player, may play the turn.

In other words, no playing ahead of the turn player - as this could give you information that we as a team do not know yet; and no playing the turn in another way that will reveal information for next turn. (as in instead of moving our ship this way - what would it have found if we moved in that way.) If you are going to play the turn so that your game reflects the team's, play exactly the same moves in the order they were played.

Everyone gets the save for the sake of logistic simplicty, and so we can all share in the discussion of what we should be doing. But please respect the above guidelines regarding its use.

Hello everyone.

Not having any official positions besides turnplayer sounds good. As time goes on, we may want people who are supposed to see to day-to-day domestic micromanagement, others to see to day-to-day evaluation and micromanagement of our defenses, etc. Right now none of that is needed, though.

Is there problems with espionage (real, not civ tech) in the demo games? This is the first demogame I have been a part of us, so I don't know these things.

Well in the Alpha Centauri DG we had an issue with espionage, though the full truth was never revealed. But in general espionage should not be an issue with this game, since it´s too early and there´s a much too friendly athmosphere around. (In Alpha Centauri we had full scale vendettas with people leaving the teams or getting kicked because of exceptionally rude behaviour or cheating.)

Agreed. We shouldn't act on suspicion. Please don't let my comments be taken too literally. It was just the combination of the strange postings plus the recent registration. I was just asking.
