maybe parents shouldn't be allowed to name children. What kind of right does a parent have to torment their childrent this way . If we really want to push for rights for children, how about we let them name themselves when they are able to speak and understand names.

Only at one point. Try every point after the kid is born The being a painin your ass never ends thats there job till they have to change your diapers. Funny how when you think of this that you enter the world naked and in need of a diaper and leave the world the same way.

There are a few very basic name conventions which should be followed:

1) One should never ever, ever use a last name (I.E. MacKenzie, Madison, etc) as a first name. Especially for a girl.

2) Always give a child a middle name that they can resort to when they decide they don't like their first name.

3) Names should be easy to spell, even for people who have never seen them. You should be able to instinctively spell it just by hearing it (unlike, say, "Oissubke"). No child ever thanked his or her parents for using a "creative" spelling.

4) Names should always have a reasonably good nickname form. If you name a kid "Mordecai", know that you're going to start calling him "Moe" after about the third time you say it. (BTW Mordecai is a horrid name which should be avoided.)

As for difficult names, the only one I know of is a Jonquil who always goes with her middle name of Elizabeth.
