What to research first Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I realise we will be able to do little real discussion until the game starts, but I at least wanted to start the thread.

Euphorica - Warrior Code, Masonry
Mongolia - Warrior Code, Pottery
Babylon - Bronze Working, Cerimonial Burial
Egypt - Masonry, Cerimonial Burial
Persia - Bronze Working, Masonry

Transylvania - Alphabet, Masonry

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Heck, we could go straight for writing if we want, and then philo. We are the only civ with Alphabet, which is more valuable than any other tech any of the others have. With any luck, we'll find a non-masonry team near us to trade that tech for another low level one.

We oughta trade Alphabet for Pottery + another low level tech. Pottery is key. Heck, I wouldn't be opposed at all to going for Pottery first, then Writing.

I'd prefer going for Writing, and then Philosophy. If we have any luck, we'll land next to Mongolia, so we can trade Masonry for Pottery.

Hoping to trade for pottery is a big risk. If we don't get it that means no granery for quite a while. I would rather go Pottery then Philosophy.

I guess it also depends on the terrain we have.

Pottery is fast and easy. We should be able to get it before any other team gets Alphabet. We should therefore go for:

Pottery
Writing
Philosophy

And trade for all the other stuff. We can get Mapmaking for free with Philo. Then consider if we need a military tech or a government tech as our highest priority.

I would slightly change the path. Philosophy gives only one advance, while Great Library can help get many more advances. Plus it gives a lot of culture points. Culture makes more sure that some border cities would not flip.

Pottery
Writing
Literature

I think that the capital city might bulid granary and then start Pyramids, which would be later switched to Great Library.

The GL is only good if we don't encounter many civs.

We can attempt smth different - "turn off" the research till finding the Education advance. This will help a lot to economy and allow us to build very efficiently much more infrastructure - facilities by hurrying them. Research off should not make us weak, as I do not think others would also be weak to the point that all the advances would be possesed by only one civ. It is enough when 2 civs have some advance then we just get it for free. When finally education gets discovered - we push for research.

I usually play the AI at emperor level and usually go for the GL if I can. At that level the AI gets a 20% discount on technology and so is very hard to keep pace with. Computer opponents are also more predictable and I can usually manipulate them into not attacking me even though all I have are warriors.

Against all human players we all research at the same pace, so we will not be as far behind in the tech race. That means that we will not get as much from the Library. It is also possible that we may fall behind with nothing but warriors to build while we wait to get a valuable advance for free. Waiting for iron or horseback riding also means that we will be the last civ to discover these resources.

I agree with the above

I am staunchly against building the G. Library. Nothing says bullseye like that. Add in the SoZ, assuming we will build it, and we are looking at an early 2x1 from the wrong side.
