How does War Wariness work? Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I know war wariness makes lots of unhappy people, but what factors cause it? And how many people can go unhappy? Also, what is the different effects from republic and democracy in this matter, and does going offensive or losing cities or conquering them affect war wariness?

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Republic and Feudalism have "low" WW. Democracy has "high" WW.

WW can get so large it forces anarchy. It's not uncommon to see more than half per city go unhappy in prolonged war. This is a gradual progression, though. Typically takes >30 turns in Republic/Feudalism (and, IMO the war should long be over before that) Democracy, without any 'ww reducing' improvements could potentially cause anarchy ~20 turns.

The exact calculations, I'll have to leave up to one of the more number intensive folks around here, but losing cities will add to it, going offensive adds to it. Basically everything other than attacking enemy units in your own territory will add to it.

Go Fascism!

It's great to see these fuzzy factors being tested and quantified on civ forums. I'd like to see more detailed descriptions of things like this in the civilopedia for Civ4!
