Euphorica: 4000 BC Increase Your PM Length

Turn orders for 4000 BC:

* Move settler 9 to found capital next turn
* Move settler 2 to explore
* Move warrior 6 to explore
* Move warrior 4 to explore
* Move worker 8 to explore and to road
* Move worker 8 to irrigate
* Worker roads ivory
* Move final settler 3 to settle

Attached a final pic. Rhoth, we took your advice and McMeadow's, and built the city on the hill (well, next turn anywho.) We discussed (until MSN crashed) the turn for a half hour or so before doing the whole thing (moved 1 thing then talked for minutes!) Attached is a pic and the general idea for where we're settling. The Settler that went 2 can either settle 2 or 23 from its current location, or somewhere else if somewhere else indicates much happier location. Settler 3 is going 3-6 from that spot to make a worker pump.

I have a question - why didn't we just settle on top of the Ivory? We still get Ivory not to mention that we're one turn ahead on the capital build...besides, any attack on the capital will have to attack across water (defensive bonus) - did you all notice that that square is TOTALLY surrounded by a river?

Just my two cents worth....

Suffering from ads?

We had a long discussion over it. In the end we wanted to use the extra commerce from the ivory source. Snoop performed a test where he concluded that settling on top of the ivory loses the commerce bonus. We missed out on the defense bonus from the river, as we argued that it was the hilltop that would give us the defense bonus (as well as it now seems).
Furthermore we wouldn't be able to get the cow irrigated in time to have the city grow in 7 turns if we didn't move, unless we would commit 2 workers to the job, losing a worker turn. Off course now it still comes down to 8 turns (but this yields no loss either).
Last of all, it just works perfectly with the production this way. Almost no loss of shields the first 30 turns, including having perfectly timed chops (which has all been reported in the excell-sheet I sent around).

Thanks for being critical...

Ah, good point McMeadows...I wasn't trying to be critical, just curious.

Got spare money?

Yep, snoop and McM are correct about losing the commerce bonus. Settling on a gold hill is even worse as you ultimately lose 3 commerce points in a non-despotic government.

Also, the defense bonus of a river isn't as good as that of a hill.

Not only is it not as good as a hill, but it works against us during several critical eras of the game ... namely any time that offensive fp is better than defensive (like cavalry!). Rivers hurt us when attacking out of the capital, while hills help us but don't hurt us.

Oh, and I figured out why i was disagreeing with McM about the commerce bonus of ivory. We're in one of those rare situations in a Despotism where the STP (Standard Tile Penalty) affects commerce. So there's effectively one bonus for the ivory, but in any other gov't will have 2.
