The save is in. Looks like a nice start, but I think everyone is guaranteed one so...

Look at the pic (or open the save)

9 units in total, 1 scout, 3 settler, 2 warriors, 3 workers.

We're sitting on a plain with ivory, surrounded by rivers(!), we got cattle to the north and bonus grassland to the east.

My suggestions:

1 Build a city on the spot.

This will give us a better view of our surroundings and give ideas on what we do next.

(that scout should probably go 1,2 to check out the river, in which direction we should send at least one settler but we will se about that later)

And the minimap, we seem to be northwest of the center.

In case anyone is wondering, I am normally not awake this time of the day but I have a cold. It's not the sleep-20-hours-a-day type (My favourite cold) but the head-hurt,nose-full-of-muckus,unable-to-sleep-more-than-4-hours-straight and generally feeling miserable

Oh, we should make a password for the save. 'Blood' would probably be too easy but how about 'aorta'?

Very Nice...but as this is a modified map, do you think the admin gave ivory to more than one civ??

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

I had initially wanted to build the city on the spot but I changed my mind.

Reasons for building the city where we stand:

1. We don't lose a turn.
2. The city is surrounded by river (good defence bonus).
3. We have a lux immediately.

Reasons for not building the city immediately:

1. There might be something better near that we might miss if we build a city at once and the capital is the most important city.
2. The city is surrounded by river which will impede the movement of our units along roads - I hate that.
3. The lux won't produce as many bonuses as it would if we worked it.
4. Building the city on the other side of the river (on the hill in the direction 9) would possibly allow for more cities built along the river and confer a greater defence bonus.

Conclusion:

- all workers build roads on this spot, being the ivory
- scout 2, 1
- a settler 1, probably to settle next turn
- a settler 9, to settle next turn
- a settler 4
- a warrior 7
- a warrior 9

Tired of ads?

After thinking a bit more I think the warrior I suggested go 9 should go 6 instead and then next turn before we settle on the hill 9 we should go on the hill 3 with that warrior.

After thinking it over I agree that the starting spot is not the best as we would get movement restrictions until the next age. I don't think a city at 1 would be optimal either, as the cattle won't get connected until the culture expand.

Like ljube suggested, we should build a city at 9 next turn
-we get out of the 'river trap'
-we get a hill bonus for our capital(only of minor importance, if someone gets that close we're screwed anyway
-we can work the cattle from turn 1
-we will get the bonus grassland from turn 1
-we can extend our road network down both sides of the river

workers:
1 road the ivory(we don't need it until our city grows anyway)
2 go north to irrigate/road the cattle

1 warrior protect our capital site.

The scout go 2,1 to see what lays ahead. The rest of the units move according to what he see.

I've got something similar that screws up everything from the neck up...

Don't remember if the common cold is caused by a virus or bacteria though.
