I haven't even checked it out yet...that's good to hear regarding the ease to PBEM.

If I get some time, maybe I'll setup a PBEM this weekend and see who's interested.

the main screen goes black, and i wait and wait and wait, then i Ctrl-alt-Delete to end program

The way it allways works here is I play the turn (units all being moved) then the lower rght hit the "end button" and a pop up states to send the turn to (in your case would come to me) then hit quit in that screen

the save ends up on your desktop

as for pw try between 10-20 % varies from person to person..

if I have a lot of rivers I will if not I wait a bit

with Grassland.ocean or prairies pw helps to bolster quickly

The PW is not too important at this stage. But not more then 10%. And use zero % if you don'w see any prary or ocean. You can't build anything on forest anyway.

The most important things on this stage are sliders.
Try to max production. Then put food on 1 up from minimum. Then set the money until all the cities are at
least 73 happy. But be careful. If any city is going to grow in the next turn, temporarily set the money slider higher so that that city is at least 75. othewise you can loose the city to famine if it riots after moving to pop=2.

Finally, for sicience, go for religion and then theocracy ASAP. Theocracy is far and away the best government until later in the game.

I agree which is where I was going above

if your on grassland than have pw you could help gold by having mines on goods tiles or farms on same if near rivers

or water bodies

hint:

if no water is near you would basically need to build a "ROAD" of farms from a source of water
