I would definitely say most men have an edge intellectually. Most women don't seem to care about that stuff. They care about stupid relationships and stuff. Anyway, that's as far as I can figure them out. I'm probably completely wrong.

Look, guys, I gave you all the easy out: blame women for any difference in brain power that may or may not exist.

also you people that claim this is sexist aren't reading it right, the only thing that was found was that men have slightly faster visual pattern recognition then women which would support the "its the women's fault" hypothesis that I posited in my first post. erm and that it means that my title was somewhat... misleading...

Well, women and men are different in the areas of intelligentsia. Men can handle mathematical problems better, having better space thinking, object thinking and all that. This fact is undisputed. Women have their own strong areas where they beat men. Like knitting and make up, finishing colouring books and making cookies.

This reminds me from all those "girls are smarter than men because we have better brains LOL" threads in www.demi.fi (a Finnish website/forum for Finnish teenage girls... teh horror indeed) which Tupsumato (a Suomithreadi regular) linked us at #suomi...

I personally think that this study clearly proves us that human species hasn't evolved much, since both sexes still have to waste large amounts of money in order to prove differences that are trivial at best so they could just feel themselves superior...

This study doesn't mean anything. For starters, it's published in some journal named Intelligence, not Nature, Science, Lancet or a host of other more well known ones. Secondly, the researchers only measured the activation of the visual cortex. Finally, the brain works asynchronously and in parallel, so this measurement probably doesn't mean anything.

Perhaps I should've added "bother to" between "men" and "spend". In case you didn't get it: my point was that you could also easily argue that guys who spend huge amounts of their time on becoming 'the best' in playing games (like say, poker variants, chess, civ2) are the ultimate morons since they waste their precious lifetime in a completely useless activity.

What the data showed was that the signals were transmitted slightly faster in male brains. The authors concluded that is was probably due to a thicker myelin sheath around the nerve axons. As the study didn't try to correlate the transmission velocity with intelligence, the data obviously didn't prove anything about that. However, I'm sure someone is already investigating it

That might have something to do with the fact that men were hunters for a significant amount of time in the prehistorical period.

The averages are very close. Since the spread follows the normal distribution for both genders, the overlap is enormous. In fact, it's quite probable that the fastest thinker in the world is female despite this.

Studying the physical qualities of the brain in an attempt to scientifically quantify intelligence is a fool's mission. European scientists in the 19th and early 20th century used this method to 'demonstrate' that the white man was smarter than the negro, the native american and the asian man. What they failed to mention was that they selected skulls to measure with tremendous bias, and the results are pretty meaningless anyway.
