I am very fond of the Minuteman missle system. It trumps most classes of firearms.

For long range target shooting, either one of the .50 caliber sniping rifles - I don't have my gun digest handy. For varmint shooting (long range small caliber sniping) a bolt action .243, though some of the wildcat .243 cartridges, i.e. the 30-06 cartrigdge necked down to take a .243, are supposed to be awesome, especially with a long bull barrel (heavy barrel). In medium calibers the Weatherby cartridges are nice, and the wildcat 7mm-30. caliber Weatherby (a .30 Weatherby necked down to 7mm) has taken some of the 1000 yard competitions, at least a decade ago when I was still following that sort of thing. I have the .30 Weatherby, it's one of three factory produced southpaw rifles, and I got it for a very good price. Kicks like a MF.

Takes three people to carry a .50 cal sniper rifle, and you can't snap shot worth a damn.
I have had trouble with both weatherby and remmington cartridges in tropical environments (which have been corrected by removing ten grains of powder). Still I stand by my orignal post, .375 is the best al round calibre I have used. As a totally useless statistic, a 375 cal bullet will only leave between a 3 and 7mm hole in the heart of an african buffalo (depending on if heart is contracted or not) if fired from front and less than 50 metres. Additionally, a person hit in the lung with a 30 06 has a 72% chance of survival if he/she gets basic (compression bandage) treatment within five minutes and a 98% chance of survival if they are still alive one hour afterwards. The only real danger is if an arterery was hit on the way through apparently/ I will track down the source of that little tidbit.
There are sme good book available on bullets, calibres and rifles (with impressive analysis on wound ballistics) available if you care to look or ask.
