Yuki Kajiura has dabbled in game music too, and I think the score she did for Xenosaga II was excellent.

I just got a chance to listen to Xenosaga Ep. II's music recently, and I was a bit underwhelmed. Kaijura did WONDERFUL work on Noir & .hack; XS II was merely good, and I had gotten used to Mitsuda.

But yeah. If we're sticking to PC games, I'll say Heroes of Might & Magic has always had pretty good music. On consoles, we have Uematsu (already mentioned for Final Fantasy series) & Mitsuda (Xenogears, Chrono games, Xenosaga, a bit of Shadow Hearts) as two obvious notables... also very good composers would include Motoi Sakuraba (Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Golden Sun, Baten Katios... closest thing to a progressive rock video game composer around) Michiko Naruke (Wild ARMs series), Yoshitaka Hirota (Shadow Hearts & SH2- a video game counterpart for Taku Iwasaki, who did fine anime music in a similar style), Yoko Shimamura (Parasite Eve, Legend of Mana), Michiru Yamane (Castlevania series, other stuff), Noriyuki Idaware (Lunar series, Grandia series) & Jeremy Soule (KOTOR 1 & 2, Total Annihilation, Secret of Evermore). Hmm, that was longer than I intended... I suppose I give away that I listen to entirely too much video game music in my spare time.

I liked the music of the swamp castle to HoMM III.
I liked Imperialism II music and I guess I like EU II music.
But what I loved was music to three computer games.
First one was a "combat" game, and the raid of Vacyries (whatever) of Wagner suited it very well!
The second one was an usual kill-everything-on-your-way-spaceship game. I don't remember the title, but I loved the music. It was a bit simiar, or perhaps the same as one Queen theme of Flash Gordon.
But the best of all was a music to the great game in which You operated a small man painting houses.
I think it was some classical music piece as well. I don't know what was it, but it was great. I still can sing (well, as long as I can sing at all) these tunes, though I haven't played these games for oh, over 10 years.

CtP 1 had the best game music that I've ever heard. Especially the arabic theme. That was great.

An ultra-nerdy guy hosted several seasons of a weekly 30-minute show on Swedish Radio called Syntax Error, playing old gaming music from Amiga, Atari, C64 and early consoles. Especially the C64 games had some magic in their simpliness, with only 3 tones polyphony.

I think Blizzard made the best music for later games. The rock theme for the humans in Starcraft is great.

And the music in "Rome Total War" make me turn up my speakers whenever I'm alone in the room. The epic macho-music when you march towards the enemy in the manual battles gives you a feeling of being invulnerable.

Unfortunately, Halo 2 didn't entirely reproduce the Halo musical excellence. I remember, for instance, coming to the bridge on AOTCR and the dramatic music would come on and it was just SO COOL. It's not as purely awesome in Halo 2, IMO, though the music when you get on the gondola is really good.

Hitoshi Sakimoto (YmoH.S for really old geezers), done things like Ogre Battle and Vagrant Story, will do FFXII, Masaharu Iwata (REZON), mostly same games as Sakimoto, Junya Nakano, much of FFX...

Yoko Shimomura, (Parasite Eve, Kingdom Hearts, Front Mission), Bunbun (Megaman III), Koji Kondo (Super Mario games), whoever did the musics for Nintendo World Cup on NES...

Jun Ishikawa (Kirby3), Michael Giacchino (Medal of Honors), Miyoko Kobayashi, Masanori Hikichi (Terranigma), Yasunori Mitsuda (Radical Dreamers), Follin brothers (Tom&Jerry on NES, Bionic Commando on C64)

Allied General on the PSX had good music. As does Panzer General 2 on PC. And the Syndicate theme rocks. And Command&Conquer had good music.

And Jeremy Soule for Secret of Evermore.

for a new game after 2000, try the Sims2. I just loved the Metal station. Some of that stuff is better than the real music you hear on the radio like. Better than limp bizkit that's for sure.
