I hereby officially state, that Lotus 2 is awesome.
Cannon Fodder also RULES . I didn't remember that there were some absolute CLASSICS .. the singing in cannon fodder is also priceless.

Giana Sister's isn't too bad.. it's the old school hero music... not total hero music but almost.. you know not quite high score music, but close .

In no particular order: Anything done by Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy series) or Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, though I'm not sure if CC is pre-2000); Doom and Doom II; and any Ecco the Dolphin game.

I still occassionally let the in-game music play with MoO2 and Total Annihilation. The others...meh. I prefer my music collection.

Mitsuda also did Xenosaga Episode I, which was kind of meh mostly, but had some good tracks. Your post, however, pretty much covered what I would've posted. Halo's is fine, but the mere scope of those two Japanese rpg composers is just awe-inspiring. Yuki Kajiura has dabbled in game music too, and I think the score she did for Xenosaga II was excellent.

aww shucks. for some stupid reason, I can't choose games after 2000.

My votes goes with Diablo then. Civ2 (especially the conflicts expansion) after that.

I like a lot of game music. Fallout wasn't bad. it's very low key, behind the scenes type stuff.

Outcast (1998) had some great orchestral music too. The Shamazaar theme still gives me goosebumps.

Something tells me Pekka needs to adjust his time limit a bit.

Going back to older games, loved the atmospheric music of Ascendancy. Perfect for a space 4X game.

I can't remember this, but it reminded me of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which had exactly one bit of music I loved, and I keep loving that one bit .

And what else, hm...ah, yes, of course! Famous C64 composers!

Martin Galway (best work IMO: the loader music for Ocean games)
Rob Hubbard (I listened to the music of One Man and His Droid for several dozen times in a row once... and who could forget the loader music of Sanxion?)

Nobuo Uematsu composed the greatest "game music" ever. His Final Fantasy soundtracks, especially VI, are unsurpassed.
