I just read that last year, Danes spent a total of 10 billion kroner (USD 1.75 billion) on gambling, which would average 2500 kroner (USD 450) per adult citizen. And those numbers are just from the state-run lottery service, Dansk Tipstjeneste, which has a monopoly on Lotto and sports bookmaking here, and which also runs some gambling cafés with slot machines etc., but far from all of them.
Add to this the amount of money people spend on gambling at foreign bookmakers, private charity lotteries, privately run slot machines - of which one can only guess, but I'd estimate it to be at least another 5 billion kroner.
So on average, every adult spends at least USD 700 on gambling per year. Wow.

I know I didn't spend one measly nickel on it, and a lot of others didn't either, so there must be some extremely devoted gamblers out there to make up for all of us strange people who just don't get it.
It just doesn't appeal to me at all. And without sounding like I'm condemning gamblers - it's their money - , maybe some people would lead happier lives if they were more focused on what they have and the small everyday joys of life, than on feverishly trying to win the big prize which will presumably take all their worries away just like that, or not. Because I know that's why most people here play the Lotto, it's not for the enjoyment of it, it's with the hope of breaking the bank so to speak. Too bad they'd have better odds of being hit on the head by a nice, juicy flying pig.

Most people I know gamble small stakes for fun, on their football team, boxing or a friendly game of cards or pool.
it's nice taking money off your friends.......
In the UK once you've picked your 6 Lotto numers it's hard to stop, 'cos you'd know you missed the big one if they ever came up. So most people would rather pay the 2 quid a week just in case, not 'feverishly trying to win the big prize which will presumably take all their worries away' as you melodramatically put it.
For 99% of people it's just a harmless flutter while they go and get their daily papers. As for the other 1%, f$#k 'em, the weak willed losers, if it wasn't gambling they were addicted to it'd be drugs or booze.
