.. how much this sucks. My HD just crashed, I think the needle jumped or something, and there went all my work. All my hard work on downloading all that music and movies, everything gone. all my important stuff, gone. My school work from the whole Uni era, gone, all of it. My work on this mobile project that I'm supposed to be turning in this week, gone. All of it. It was a helluva lot of work, totally gone, everything is gone.

Yeah.. That's life I guess. And now some smartass will come and say why didn't you make backups. Yeah.. to what? Another HDD? Nice one there, you are so right always.

Why didn't you make backups? To a recordable CD or a removable HD?




Incidentally, does the HD still spin up? If it does, the data might be recoverable without you having to pay through the nose for it...

If I could afford all kinds of fancy college boy gadgets, I would buy them, but I can't. Now I'm working with this ancient old HD, and this is just not going to cut it, I still have to get a new HD somewhere..

No it doesn't spin. it makes that pinging sounds again and again when it tries to ... SWuuu Ping, Swuuu Ping, Swuuu Ping for the better lack of terms.

You can get new hard disks for less than $100 with more than 160GB of space online: www.pricewatch.com , www.ebuyer.com , www.newegg.com .

Samsungs are nice (yes, I'm biased towards them anyway, but... I'm happy with my 160GB disk I got for $90, including s&h. )

Sounds like the drive is f*cked, though. Sorry to hear it, man.

yeah I pretty much figured out there's not much I can do.. in the world of science, it might be possible ot save the files, but that would cost VERY much. So that's not an option. It's not the value of the money that went with the HD, it's all the work in it that went with it, all the information I need, all that stuff... lots of it.. some if it I can replace, most of it I can't. Plus I'm moving and I really really can't afford new HD, but I have to so ... maybe they still let me dance at the hardtop boys or something

Yeah, I got a 200GB external firewire drive for £100 from Ebuyer, and you can probably get a bigger internal drive for less money. Dabs.com is even cheaper.

Pekka, isn“t there any computer tech wizard at the uni that can salvage your files and do it as training? But the chances of that happening are slim at best I suppose. Hardware failure sucks
