It's all temporary if you're planning on higher acedemic thingamawhatsits. Take the job, get the higher academic thingamawhatsits, in whatever order is necessary.
Trust me, the academic thingamawhatsits matter. Today I saw an ad in the paper (the friggin local paper) saying "Ph.D in Computer Science, Security Clearance, 110K salary." That's about twice what I currently make, just for a friggin Ph.D. and a US citizenship (plus security clearance). I mean, stick with it -- it only gets better, knock on wood.

As for your job-blues: IIUC, it's temporary until next September or October?
You shouldn't worry too much about it then, because you'd have left your previous school anyway, and you won't stay long enough in your new school to make a big difference onits member's training.
Besides, the money is not the only reason why you switched: you're now closer to your home, and to your wife. This is priceless, and many people would think you have your priorities straight.
You should keep contact with your friends from your previous school, because you're probably more than simply a colleague to them. As for those who can't forgive you for your "betrayal" (if any), well, these people didn't value much in the first place then, if your teaching location affects so much your relationship. There's no need to cry for them.

Ah, excellent points.
I do intend to stay in the new job for many a year. I'll be only the third head coach of this program's history, roughly 45 years. The current coach has been there for 21 years. He's there for at least one more when I arrive. But, at 68, he's looking to get out. The fella before him, the first coach, was there for 24 years. When he retired, the alumni bought a brand new home and sold it to him for $1.
