I couldn't agree more. If I want to watch an animated film, I'll go and see The Incredibles or Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. The CGI abuse in the latest Star Wars films is a disgrace.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

quote:
I'd actually say the main problems is that Ep 1 and II are simply means to an end. They both are lead ins to Ep III where Anakin turns to Vader. They are expository. In the original trilogy each movie was somewhat self-contained, even though it pointed to something else happening. We already know what everything is leading up to now, we were unaware with the first two. One reason I think RotJ suffered was that, again, we knew what was coming.

Imran

I disagree with you. From the first movies we know little about the Old Republic, the Clone Wars, and how the main characters participated in them. Yes we do know a few hard fact, the Jedi's used to be the protectors of the galaxies, but a young Jedi named Darth Vader turned to the dark side and help wipe out the Jedi. We know that Obi Wan taught that Jedi. We know that Anakin was a great pilot during the Clone Wars. Obviously from ANH we know that the Empire replaced the Old Republic. Yes it turns out that Anakin is also Darth vader, and that he's Luke's father (and Leiah's too), but we don't really know much more than that. So there is (well was) a wide unknown expanse of creative freedom that Lucas could have tapped into to get three great stories. I don't think knowing the eventual outcome has to hurt the story. Think of Memento where we start out with a murder at the first of the story, and then work backwards from their finding out all of the details. Of all of the important things Lucas could have focused on in the first movie he choose a pod race. If the phantom menace was like a christmas special part 2 instead of the first of the original trilogy I wouldn't have minded. Sadly that wasn't the case.

ahh yes, I'd rather watch the christmas special over a phantom menace or aotc. It at least has comedy value.

Um... that's quite a bit of knowledge right there . Much more than you'd know from other movies. And of course knowing the eventual outcome hurts the story! Especially when Star Wars isn't really that famous for having good dialogue or acting, etc (like Memento had). It has good special effects, yeah. The best part of the entire Star Wars series was the shock that Vader was Luke's father. The 'shocking' moments that made ESB the best movie can't really be done when you know what everything is leading to and what will happen.

Now if Star Wars was about dialogue and character development, etc, then perhaps it wouldn't matter, but it isn't and so it does.

It's also a reason that RotJ suffers. You basically know what's coming, except for the sweet deposing of the Emperor by Vader (while AotC had the Yoda fight). It's like the Rocky II syndrome. Though it was a kick ass lightsaber fight.

I guess that's my point. Before the Phantom menace came out Star Wars was the ultimate franchise. Everyone knew it was going to have good or great special effects, and nothing prevented it from having good acting, dialougue etc. George Lucas could have probably hired almost any actor, director, or screen writer he wanted. Besides the two characters that have played Anakin's character, he's actually had a good group of actors, but certainly TPM or AotC isn't the finest performance of ANY of the actor's involved in those two movies, including Hayden Christenson. There isn't a law that said Star Wars movies could only have good special effects and nothing else. Big mistake George is all I can say.

Why would you expect good acting or dialogue from Star Wars when the original trilogy didn't have good acting or good dialogue? That's not what it is about...

Actually, Lucas made Star Wars with an eye at the old Buck Rodgers movies with special effects and hammy dialogue and acting. So, in effect, there may have been a pressing custom to make it only about special effects and wierd stories.

Tee hee, that takes me back to the late 1970s after he first Star Wars movie was released. Pat Robertson published a little book demonstrating how Star Wars related to the Bible. Luke was of course was supposed to be analogous to Jesus and Darth Vader to Satan. Sales of the book dropped dramatically after the second movie, when we learned that Luke was Darth Vader's son.

Yes, this looks like it will be approximately twice as good as attack of the clones. Unfortunately, this means it will still suck azz.
