My job hunt continues!

----
I posted my resume on Monster.com and after a crap load of spam trying to get me to sell insurance I had a call from an actuall headhunter looking to put ppl in place on the east coast for what I do. I told him I am staying on the west coast, no further than Colorado. He tells me no problem, and that he places ppl at Genentech and Amgen. I tell him that I have worked for Genentech and I will not work at their S. San Fran. site again, but I will at their Vacaville site. He has no idea what I am talking about (he is calling from Georgia). I tell him I will work for Amgen who are in Longmont, CO or Los Angeles area... He said he'd get me a job... We'll see
----

Arizona!

I got a call from a company called WL Gore... They are those ppl who make Gor-tex. I mentioned them to my dad and he had nothing but good things to say about them as they make his sutures. They have a division that makes medical implants (my field), and they are very interested in me. I need to call them on monday and set up an interview. They are a very large private company with a great amount of respect from the pharma industry. I applied to 4 different jobs at this company, so I think the odds of me getting a job is very good.

Thing is, they are in Flagstaff Arizona. I haven't been there since I was 12 and had to pee as I traveled from the Grand Canyon to Lake Powell. Anyone got anything on them, or have any opinion on the place from simple google searches? I would really like your opinion on this area and the company.

The Co. has been ranked as the top 100 places to work for by Fortune Mag ever since they started such a list, the are Fortune 500, and the town has gotten some awards as a nice place to live by National Geographic...

Help me decide.

flaggstaff.

I've been through there many times, though I haven't done anymore than eat there.

It's a smallish town. The downtown scene wasn't too bad, but you aren't going to find any notable night life. But I did see some hot chicks downtown.

The entire town is built within the trees. Most towns will clear away the trees, it's a wonder the entire town hasn't burned down. As you pass through you will have trouble seeing the entire town because of all the pine trees. As I said, this poses a fire hazard. Something to be aware of when you hear of all these wildfires.

It gets cold in the winter of course. There is snow on the ground all winter long. Beautiful in the summer. great hiking in the mountains. You are next to the highest peak in Arizona- Mt. Humphrey. I keep meaning to go hike that mountain.

I don't know much about Flagstaff besides that its sunny almost all the time, which ought to be a big plus.

The area is definitely in a state of change- population growth in the Southwest is big.

This is as big as downtown gets.

It's a beautiful town, I'd live there if it weren't so cold (and I could find a job)

the great thing is the nearby attractions.

Las Vegas of course. It's fairly close.

Sedona- very beautiful red rocks, and the approach through oak creek canyon is beautiful.

meteor crater. sure it's a big hole in the ground, but I thought it was cool.

grand canyon of course.

there's some other minor parks on the highway around there. Like petrified forrest.

None of this means anything to you if you prefer city life over nature life. For city life you'd have to go to Phoenix or Vegas.

highest peak in arizona. Flagstaff is within those mountains.

Tired of ads?

It's a nice place to visit and the NAU campus is pretty cool I guess, but trust me when I say the place is full of hippies.

Visiting
Living there

Nature is well and good, but I want food at 4 AM and there's not gonna be anything open. However, here in Phoenix traffic sucks and some places are pretty scummy. If I could get the good parts of the 2 combined, then yeah, Arizona would kick ass like Chegitz says it does.

Also, it's kind of weird looking to me that Diss is posting pictures of places I've been to hundreds of times. I feel like, ya... so what.

I think he's used to hippies. He lives in the San Fransisco area. It will seem conservative to him.

and I didn't notice any hippies. And I'm from Vegas (we don't have that many hippies)

That's how I feel... and yes, Diss I am a hippie, despite being a republican I scare ppl with my conservatisnimmism (???)....

I am looking for a place to settle down and raise a family, not a place with killer clubs and an awesome night life.

Diss' pics helped me to decide. I am granola, and the downtown looks big enough for me! Which means it's a l;ot less sheity then here.

Live in San Jose for a year and you will know, especially if you are from a small town, this place ain't for me.... I think pchang will understand.

If it is that close to Vegas I expect you (Diss) to visit, if I get the job of course.

I am looking for a laid back atmoshpere, the hippy way of life.

214 miles. Not that close, but I usually go through that way once every couple of years. I just went through there last year when I went to Sedona. You may find hippies in Sedona. Not really hippies, but new age types.

Well for one thing- the median home price in Flagstaff is around half that of what you'd pay in San Jose- and the situation's likely better as I suspect houses and lots are bigger in Flagstaff.

Suffering from ads?

I have a friend who has 100k+ in the past 6 months playing poker... He has a reservation at Extenda Stay America in Vegas in June for the World Poker Tour... He gets out of the Air FOrce a month earlier... It would be nice to be able to be in his corner during that.

Flagstaff is up in the mountains so it isn't the burning hot Arizona in your mind. I like big cities and Flagstaff struck me as a bit of a po-dunk town but it seemed safe & clean.

Here's a city profile. It seems to be a nice town with dirt cheap housing prices, a decent economy, a young population (average age is 27), and a low crime rate. There are a bunch of colleges there so I suspect it might get noisy if you live in the wrong neighborhood.

Yeah, I saw the avg age, strikes me as strange.

Bunch of colleges? Like 2?

I guess for a 50k town that is a lot though. However, that usually, only counts the locals and not the students.

Half? Try again because with a median home price of just $160,000 for a four bedroom single family home prices are closer to 1/4 or 1/5 of San Jose.

How hot does it get there in the summer? is it beyond hot like the desert, or is it cooler because it is in the mountains? I see they get snow in the winter. If the summer aren't too hot I would like to live there.

It is not desert at all, pretend you're in Colorado and that's what the weather is like. It gets up to the 90s in the middle of the summer there.

the elevation is 7000 feet. That's why it's cooler (and why it gets more precipitation than the surrounding desert)

The profile I linked earlier says the hottest month is July with an average high of 81.4 degrees F (nightly low in July is 47 degrees) and the coldest month is January with an average high of 42.8 (low of 13.4). Year round they seem to average 75% sunny days and a total of 23 inches of rain per year.

Not bad but the temperatures are a bit low for my cold blood.

A bit low for me too, but I think that may be just because of the snow. Central Valley and Bay area get gold, just not when it may snow.

Climate wise I think it's perfect. I am just wondering if I can handle the isolation... or am I going to have to spend more time on CG!
