I am quite fond of C-Evo. The gameplay is markedly superior to that of vanilla Civ2 or Freeciv.

AFAIK, modding is limited to new maps and new civilizations with custom graphics sets. I actually did a big one back when it was at version ~0.6.x, but it's not compatible with 0.14.0.

Full PM-box? Change here!

It looks like this game has a lot of potential.

It's the work of one guy, but there is a lot that can still be done:

* You can add sounds if you like

* Add new and tougher AI routines (apparently you can download more AI routines from the site and add them to your game)

* Uses Civ2 graphics

* Additional features could be added, such as a zoom function, scenarios, etc...

I know about that set for c-evo 0.6, way back in 2001!

Once in awhile I try out a new version. C-evo has a good try at some new gamemechanisms and their attempt on cracking ICS. Personally I like the unit workshop and the mini wonders.

There are a number of AI packages available you can try out but for some reason I usually let the AI's play against themselves instead of playing myself.

As St. Leo said already, It can't really do scenarios.

Had a play with C-evo a couple of years ago. The nice thing is you can have civ-specific units/graphics/city gfx. I don't recall any scenario potential though, as Cap says, which kind of limited my interest in it. Nice though

Got spare money?

I wonder if scenaros can be programmed into it?

Apparently, the game is in constant development.

For anyone with programming skills, this looks like it could be quite a project to work on...

Aha!

Good old C-evo!

I like it, and would love to see a good mod made of it.

One quibble:
The ancient eras need more increments to the years...Time goes by too fast...

There is an auto saver.

From the FAQ:

A4. Saving Games

Q/S: Is there really no possibility to save a game without quitting it?

A: There is no need to save a game, because (1) each book contains the complete game and allows to go back to every single turn and (2) in case of the game crashing there is an autosave from the last completed turn.

The dumb way that games are saved in C-evo completely turned me off the game. To me it seemed unnecessarily opaque compared to the various CIV games. What's a "book" anyway?

Unfortunately, I'm afflicted with an incurable, near-terminal case of finger trouble. The best medical quacks have found my hand-eye coordination to be somewhat less than 0%.

To get around this terrible handicap, for some big scens that involve moving hundreds of units, I may have 20 or more intermediate saves per turn. This avoids having to repeat the entire turn because my left hand did not know what my right one was doing when it derailed the last two freights.

At the end of the turn, the intermediates get deleted and I get to fumble my way through the next turn.

Try doing that in C-evo.

Tired of ads?

"Book Chapters:"

At the opening game screen you will see a tab labelled "book chapters". This contains all the saved turns of your game plus an auto save.

Just select the saved turn or auto save to continue with the game up to that point.

I think if people like this game, they could send suggestions to Civ-evo's creator to include changes to the game.

Such as:

* Game saves

* Scenario creation

* zoom function, etc.

Of all the Fan created Civ2 games this one seems to come the closest to the look and feel of Meier's Civ2.

It seems its creator was tired of the problems and limitations that plagued Civ2 (as we all are).

It would be kind of interesting if the Civ2 community, in addition to working on Civ2 and ToT, also "adopted" Civ-evo...

We have always wanted a Civ2 game in which we had access to the source code and could program an AI.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if the community approached Civ-evo's creator and suggested some form of collaboration.

We have all the graphics, scenarios and talent here... Now all we need is for Civ-evo to incorporate more changes we would like to see...

The unit design feature is nice... However, since it costs tech research to develop stuff, it means a much narrower selection in practice.

It also means more choices and decision-making

Do you develop lots of basic units?

Or...

Do you develop fewer, but tougher units?

Develop a stronger/tougher battleship - and you may not need as many ships (hence it costs less in terms of city support for those units)...

Kind of reminds me of those uber overstrength 15-strength tank units in Panzer General 2...

Cheers!

Uh, the C-Evo site has an active forum. I tried to persuade Steffen to relocate to Apolyton a few versions back to no avail. If you are going to badger about new features, that would be the best place to do it.

The last time I played C-evo, 3-4 years ago, saves at the end of turns as well as all the intermediate saves that I made were entered in the "book". At 200-250k apiece, it was amazing how the intermediate saves ate up disk space when I was creating them at a rate of 10 to 20 per turn. The limited capacity of the hard drive on my old computer couldn't take much of that. IIRC, I got fed up with having to open the "book" folder, figure out which were the intermediate saves and then delete them.

Also, I cannot recall if C-evo allows one to rename game files to suit one's own preferences before saving them. I rename all of mine, usually by adding a number prefix (-001, -002 . . . . . -00n) to keep the saves sequential even if the names generated by a scen do not form an alphabetic or numerical sequence.

Obviously, I favor the highly flexible and transparent approach to saving games that is available in CIV.

I wouldn't say we are going to "badger" civ-evo's creator; merely engage him in some constructive dialogue...

I wouldn't even suggest getting him to "re-locate" to Apolyton (although that would be nice). My suggestion would be to "invite" him here for a friendly discussion; show him around; and open up the discussion on what could be done with civ-evo...

It would be a win/win situation for everyone concerned...

Cheers!
