Gmail... you're joking right?

What a pain in the ass. 10 meg size limit. Having to rename everything to a .jpg so it'll upload. Don't get me wrong, I love gmail, but for a p2p system is royally sucks.

So the ability to warez stuff makes a system peer-to-peer today?

(incidentally... is "to warez" a verb, anyway? I find it much more appropriate than "to pirate", so I sure hope it is)

I didn't say anything like that.

And if the point is just to share things with friends (as would be necessary if you were using gmail), why wouldn't one just set up an FTP? Hell, why wouldn't you just use something like MSN messenger and send it directly? Gmail is intended for mail, not file sharing.

Hm... yes, in fact I should have quoted q cubed's post instead... and since violating the principle of precision is an even greater sin for him... Q^3! I'm calling you out for a duel! Explain to me how gmail is supposed to be a peer-to-peer network!

heh. it doesn't fit the basic premise of a p2p network; however, neither does an ftp site.

granted, if you have the resources, setting up an ftp is better; however, if you're on the run and do not have the capacity for setting up such a service, gmail provides oodles of space for songs.

you have authentication; theoretically, everybody should know each other, and it will have a greater level of trust. you pretty much know precisely where the files are from. there's the search feature. you can also associate certain files with each other.

no, it's not a true p2p system. is it even an efficient system? no.

but it's one of those suggestions that's from way out in left field. it's also a solution which does work. i use it with a few of my friends because i don't have a computer which can serve as an ftp host. none of them are capable of setting one up, either.

and some of the songs we have are damned hard to find on any of the file sharing networks.

Because we want to be able to continue using MSN. They spell it out very clearly, that Messenger is not to be used to transfer these files.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Bit Torrent sucks, though it has lots of users (content). dc++ is better because you go directly to downloading or uploading, meaning you can get good transfer speed, I get usually closer to 1 megabyte per second these days. At least 400kb/s anyway.

As for music, depends what you like, my weapon of choice is SoulSeek. That's pretty much about it. I hate emule.

But of course, outside p2p-networks, and including them, FTP is the best way to transfer files, your music, video and movie needs.

I do it all the time. I had no idea that something like this could actually be an issue (and I have a feeling that it isn't at all). My only problem with it is that it's really slow to do. MSN messenger seems to cap transfers at dialup speeds most of the time.

eMule for bigger and older files
DC++ for music
Bittorent for newer (and big) files

Of course for bittorrent to be very usefull you have to know the best places. The place I'm at (which got most 'votes' back when I didn't know bittorrent (a few months ago)) doesn't accept new users for the time being though
