Typical. I guess that this will go the way of Microsoft's Hotmail Licence Agreement a few years back (if that went).

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I'm sure the U.S. goverment forced this. Blame Bush - or Ashcroft the departing attorney general.

They have to use AIM's in prosecuting child molesters I'm sure. You know, the one's that setup up a date with a supposed 13 year old, and it's really an FBI agent. That's the only evidence they have (aside from the word of the FBI agent).

I think Skype has a message chat as well

If you put your trust in Google, well then you are hopeless. Companies are evil by definition, Google is no exception and the larger they get the more power they have.
It cannot be seen now because they are still growing a lot without having to do much to defend their marketshare, but once they are on the defense and a slight change in the board of directors, you'll see how evil they can get.

Anyway Fanboyism sucks big time! There are better things to waste your ideals on!

Does this apply to those who use the network, or just those who use their client.

I don't use the AIM client - I use Adium.

yeah once google starts getting pressure of lawsuits, they may change.

I have a question though. Google isn't based out of the U.S right? I always though it was Australia. I've always wondered how international law plays in privacy.

One interesting thing to note is google has now allowed people to remove their names from the address book. I guess they got a barrage of complaints when it was revealed you could find the telephone numbers and addresses of people online.

edit: it seems they removed it. Just a couple weeks ago I remember looking up my name and seeing an option to remove it (though my actual address never popped up- just other people with my name). Maybe they removed the address book feature.

I don't think so. There was a big stink a few years back when Hotmail tried to introduce similar conditions.

It's so unnecessary and anti-social to do so. Of course they should be able to monitor your chat logs if they get a court order from the police authorising them to do so, but just because they want to is not a good enough excuse.

* Cue Libertarians to somehow justify AOL's actions as not infringing our freedom.

Don't. It will just depress you.

Basically all the agreements are the same: all your base are belong to them, and if you don't like it you can't even get your money back (because opening the box to read the agreement that tells you that there are no opened box returns means no open boxed returns.

Inflate your Upload Space

I don't get what the big deal is... AOL is a company and they offer a service. They have a right to do what they want with their service. If you don't like it, don't use it. Nobody is forcing you to use it. Anyone dumb enough to think that what you pass over the internet is secure and private doesn't deserve privacy in the first place.

AFAIK, AOL doesn't advertise their service to have any sense of privacy. And people shouldn't treat AIM as a privacy service.

If they want to spy on me, that's fine. I'm not sure what good it will do them though. Here's an example of most of my chats on AIM:

"wassup"

"hey"

"w00t! j00 sux0r"

"no j00 sux0r"

If they want to listen to my conversations be my guest. I use AIM because it's easy to use and because most of my friends use it.

If I wanted to chat with a degree of privacy, there's always encryption.

Well, you never know when it might pay off.

quote:
OK, let's be honest. You didn't really read the EULA. How do I know? Because hardly anyone does. To prove that point, PC Pitstop included a clause in one of its own EULAs that promised anyone who read it, a "consideration" including money if they sent a note to an email address listed in the EULA. After four months and more than 3,000 downloads, one person finally wrote in. That person, by the way, got a check for $1,000 proving, at least for one person, that it really does pay to read EULAs.

Is anyone reading this? PC Pitstop offered a financial incentive in its EULA, and it took four months before anyone responded.

iChat uses the AIM network Jrabbit.

Try MSN or Jabber. I use Adium on the mac - that supports multiple protocols.
