I just heard about this in class. When you drive through McDonald's for an order a person in another country will take it. Anyone heard this yet?

was on the news like 2 weeks ago. i think it's a good thing. better service, still the same # of jobs (different area probably) and perhaps higher pay.

this seems weird to me. Now you need 2 people to do the job as 1 person. I don't get it.

Normally you have 1 person take the order, deliver the food to the window, and handle the cash transactions. Now you need 2 (as a person and India cannot deliver the food to the window and take the money of course)

yes but you still need individual people at each location to hand out the food and take the money. They are still going to have more employess than they currently have. It's just the person doing the food handing out and money accepting has 1 less responsibility now.

I once spent 30 minutes on the phone with someone from India because someone signed up an AOL account using my name... it was the biggest pain in the ass ever.

If the # of jobs is the same and the pay is the same or higher there is no reason to do it, because no money will be saved.

Outsorcing jobs in a McDonald's negates part of the benefit that helps overcome their overall negative impact on an immediate locale--less local jobs.

Expect communities to be more resistant to McDonald's in the future if more local jobs are axed.

Yes but apparently they are paying the Indians such a low wage that even with long distance charges and new equipment to get this system up and running they still expect to save money.

I hope it happens just to teach these bastards a lesson. They've already proven how bady they treat their US employees since they literally start everyone out on minimium wage and almost never give people raises plus they've been caught deliberately hiring illegal aliens because the aliens aren 't in a position to argue for higher wages. It is apparently cheaper for them to just pay the joke fine to the department of labor then it is to actually pay what it would take to get legal workers because here in So Cal it seems like a very large percentage are still foreigners who can't speak English.

The only fast food burger place I go to is In & Out Burger vecause not only is all of their food made fresh, instead of frozen like McDonalds, but they actually use better cuts of meat, better quality breads, real cheese (instead of that oil based crap the other places use), and they actually pay their employees a living wage. Yep, In & Out Burger starts out their zit faced teens at $11.50 and mangers get $15 per hour yet their burger meals are only $1.50 more then McDonalds and that price difference includes hugely better better ingredients.

In & Out also abides by the immigration laws and doesn't hire illegal aliens or abuse workers the way McDonalds does.

The book Fast Food Nation gave In n Out glowing raves for how they treat their employees and the quality of food they serve.

Dammit I can't find my copy, I must have borrowed it to someone.

Anyway IIRC, average length of time an employee work at McD - 3 to 6 months. For In n Out it's 5 years. That alone says a lot.

unless order takers currently do nothing else but take orders. I have seen the order takers also taking the money and handing out the food. I don't see how this eliminates jobs or saves money.

I'm just imagining the fun the first time a customer says they will have the kids meal but only if you have the elmo toy-- will the person a million miles away know if they have any elmos left ??

Kinda tough for a manager to assess and manage the order taker-- If they are screwing up you have a peeved off cutomer in Ohio and a manager that probably can't even tell who took the order
