i have just recently purchased Civ2 gold edition for my G4 ibook and, while i can play all the scenarios, I cannot create my own icons for scenarios i build b/c when I click on the "load icon" button in the Units Editor I am unable to load (wrong program? prob w/ the CD itself? ) I have converted the file to the correct format, and I have tried numerous programs (quicktime, other viewers). Is it some program that only the old Classics have?
ALSO when I try to edit the icons manually, the next time I load the game the screen is flipped out with all thes psychodelic colors.
appreciate any help you could give!

I click on the "upload file from CD" option in the Units Editor and I get an error message, telling me to change the file format. I have tried all the options given to me. And even then I get an error message that is pretty much unreadable (cut off), but I think its telling me that the program I have cant display it. I've tried many other things to display it and I can dispay it using Quicktime outside the game.

Ok, I'm not sure I did exactly the same thing... but here's what I did.
I started up the Civ II Gold application, loaded a game, and toggled the scenario edit flag. Then I selected Edit Unit from the menu, and clicked on the icon that looked like a CD. This brought up a standard file dialog, which I traversed to a "units.pict" file, which I successfully opened.
Of course I could edit the picture before getting to this point, so I assume you are trying to load graphics you created elsewhere.
Is your file a PICT format? This is sort of an old, pre OS X format, that really isn't used much anymore. This might be your problem if you've saved in a tiff, or jpeg format, which would be more common on OS X, instead.
