Refried beans Increase the size of your Attachments

Lordy, lordy, lordy. I went through my kitchen cabinets last night looking for things which have been sitting in there for ages with the intentions of using a few of the older things up. What should I find then some old dried pinto and red beans along with a bit of rice so I decide that I'll make some refried beans along with steamed rice and a few spices just to use the stuff up. Hours of boiling beans and steaming rice in a rice cooker is rewarded with some tasty bean and rice goulash type stuff which I've seasoned with a bunc of tabasco, chili powder, minced garlic, and butter. The stuff is great and I had it for both lunch and dinner yesterday but that is when the problems started.

All those beans are making me fart like no tomorrow. It doesn't smell to bad but there is enough gas for me to power a jet engine or at least create enough wind to power a sail boat. Where's the gas mask smilie when you need it?

After you soak the beans, discard the water. The oligosaccarides - complex sugars you cannot digest - are at least reduced. The bacteria in your gut fermenting those babies is why you get gas. Supposedly, if you eat beans often you get less gas.

Just one question, if the beans were canned, how were "hours" of cooking involved? Were you using Brown Rice? And why would you put beans in a rice cooker?

I never knew that. That is actually a useful thing to know, thanks.

I made the mistake of soaking the beans then cooking the beans in the same water and as it boiled down I just added more water. In the future I will discard the water the beans were soaked in and use fresh water to cook them.

Beans were dried not canned and the rice was white rice (from Thailand I believe). The white rice cooked in about 30 minutes in the rice cooker but I had to first soak the beans over night then boil them for several hours in order to make then tender enough. Once that was done I drained the water, mashed about half of the beans, mixed in the rice, tossed in Tabasco, chicken bullion, chili powder, brown gravy mix (to thicken things), black pepper, butter, minced garlic, and a bit of salt. Mix really well and ready to serve. Really simple to prepare plus its dirt cheap & nutritious
