Back to Civ II after a long tryst with C3C Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I can't remember if there is any difference among the various tribes in Civ II.

My understanding (from a similar thread at CFC) is that the color impacts your starting location, and therefore your number of techs, but that the actual tribe choice may or may not impact which techs you receive.

Anyone know for certain?

Starting techs Inflate your Upload Space

Welcome back, ummmm !

Starting techs are not the same for all civs.
The most thorough research in that field was made by Scouse Gits, almost five years ago (more than 5000 starts ).
Unfortunately the results cannot be found in the archive any longer. What you should do is send a private message to Scouse Gits.

Put an end to popups!

Where is this Great Library I keep hearing about?

I can't find a link.

EDIT: Oh, and thanks for the welcome and the info, of course.

The revised index to the Great library is one of the topped threads in the strategy section.

The SG note said

TABLE 5 - AVERAGE TECHS PER CIV COLOUR (Small Map)
(Based upon a 630 sample)

White = 1.27
Green = 1.23
Dark Blue = 1.33
Yellow = 1.33
Light Blue = 1.97
Orange = 2.1
Purple = 2.3

I guess that means if you are looking for an EL starting position in 2.42 (ie one with no techs), you will have to relaunch less frequently with the green civ. I wonder whether the difference between green and white is significant - I suspect not. I assume similar results apply to all map sizes.

(On reflection, you could devise an allocation method in which the probability of no additional techs was independent of the expected number of additional techs, but it seems unlikely that the game would work that way.)

Incidentally, I have done a much smaller test than SG which could not find any correlation between the number of grassland tiles in the initial area and the number of additional techs received.

Got spare money?

Okay, I see it now.

But I'm tellin' ya, it wasn't there yesterday.

BTW: What does EL stand for, and why is it desirable? It seems like you would want as many starting techs as you could get.

EL stands for early landing.

One of the house rules on the early landing games was that the starting position would have no starting technologies. This was partly to allow comparisons between different games - ie an early landing will be much easier if you start with Alpha, CoL and CB, so that you can start researching monarchy in 4000 BC..

The other aspect was to avoid unwanted technologies. One of the techniques in EL games is to avoid researching technologies too early in the hope that you can trade for them later or may not need them at all.

For similar reasons EL rules prohibit hut popping.

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Can you stack workers in Civ II?

I've been doing it, but there doesn't seem to be any consistency to how it works. Sometimes a few engineers can irrigate a plain in one turn, and sometimes 10 or 20 of them won't get it done until the next turn . . .

There are several exhaustive treatises on engineers in the Great Library.

Go look at them.

The short answer is: Yes

The details are more interesting.

This is the best thread about Settlers/Engineers. Especially check Topics 3.2 on.

As noted the details are quite interesting...

Full PM-box? Change here!

Didn't there used to be a screen during setup when you saw your leaderhead and got to read a little description of the history of your leader? I seem to recall Caesar and Sacajawea specifically, but on the other hand, I may just be smoking crack . . .
