Civ4 Modding Inflate your Upload Space

Here is a thread for discussing what we know of Civ4's moddability, things to do with the known moddability, and extrapolations.

It sounds to me like we could make clones of SMAC, Civ1, Civ2, Civ3, or Risk, all of which I would be interested in doing for myself. A colonization clone sounds possible and appealing too.

How would ease of moddability likely compare with the things extreme modders do now? It seems to me people do things that cannot be done using the editor. I do not want to need to learn new skills elsewhere in order to mod Civ4.

I guess it should theoretically be possible to create a RTS as well, if so desired...

Based on Locutus's 'Moddability' information, Civ4 will be incredible up to the day of release for Civ5 (assuming there will be a Civ5). The work all the different modders can do on Civ4 with the scripting language will be unbelievable. The great part about the scripting languages is they are rather common and anyone with some experience in programming could probably pick up XML in a few days/weeks. That is the most exciting part to me, so I don't have to work on my Connect Four/Space Ship/boring games anymore lol. Now any time I want to program I can go script something for Civ4. BEAUTIFUL! Oh, yes, it is beautiful!

I'll probably never try a full conversion mod myself, since Civ is already my favorite game (possibly excluding football games -- I'll beat anyone here) there is no use for me in converting it. I'd probably concentrate most of my time on tweaking the rules of the game along with the AI. The latter part seems very intriguing to me, rather than my tic-tac-toe AIs I've been making haha. I could only imagine what some of the CtP2 people might be able to do and of course Sn00py with his AMAZING graphical changes.

Well, my most experience with programming is a little with Atari Logo in the early 90's. I guess a few days/ weeks is good, but instantaneous or a few minutes would be nice too.

A football mod for Civ4... that'd be something! I guess what I'd most want to do would be cross Civ4 with each of the games I mentioned. And Chess too.

My guess is a lot of the simple changes will be easily and instaneously able to be made with probably a basic editor something along the lines of what Civ3 has. The more advanced options, such as AI scripting, might take a little bit more skill. Considering at least 95% of the people who'll buy Civ4 won't be able to even use those advanced modding options they'll almost certainly have to include some sort of basic editor.

And maybe instead of Civ5 we get an eternal stream of official mods.

Don't get overexcited, the game's still not open source. You won't be able to make a RTS game out of it, like you could make racing games out of Half-Life. But yes, the moddability will be excellent. It seems that we have the ability to build whole new feautures for the game, not just some triggers. Sounds about as moddable as CtP2, with which great things have been done.

The GameInformer article says something about being able to make a SciFi RPG.

Exactly! And that sounds great to me.

"Civ is already my favorite game (possibly excluding football games -- I'll beat anyone here)" I was implying I don't care about any game transformations to Colonization or the such b/c Civ is already my favorite (computer) game and basically the only one I do play. Football games are basically the only video games I play.

And I was only fascinated because that was something I hadn't thought of but that it sounded like would be possible. I generally have little interest in sports or sports video games, but it does sound like something interesting to do with Civ4. And with Civ4 we will never have to buy another computer game again! Bwahahaha! Maybe I'd better not point that out too loudly in case the developers realize it...

Nah, as long as Civ5 has a new game engine it'd be worth the buy.

Yeah, they'll find a way to make it worth it. They're the pros and I'm the only potential modder I'd play anything made by anyway. And thee will probably be licensed products worth buying too, like Trek stuff for instance.
